HP has launched its first Android-based tablet, the HP Slate 7. The HP Slate 7 will be priced at a very competitive $169.99 and will go on sale in April.

The Ubuntu team has been busy working on a phone OS, but it decided to take an intermediate step and create a tablet OS. The timing of the launch coincided exactly with the HTC event (leading us to question if the two are related, turns out it wasn’t) and while the new HTC One got all of the attention yesterday, it’s time to meet Ubuntu for Tablets.

Ubuntu’s interface started off as a desktop UI, but Canonical – the company behind Ubuntu – has a vision similar to that of Microsoft. They want one interface to conquer all screen sizes, from a pocketable phone to the 60” TV on your wall. Read more »

Canonical, which recently announced it’s developing Ubuntu for smartphones, has put a peculiar countdown on the ubuntu.com website saying “Tick, tock, tablet time!”

Interestingly, the timer coincides with the one on the HTC website, which will end at the start of the company’s press events in London and New York. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 has leaked so frequently in the past couple of months (heck, even Samsung’s head of Mobile Communications confirmed it), that the device may as well be out already.

The latest news about the compact tablet is that it’s set to hit retail in Europe at the end of March for around €359 for the WiFi only version (€449 if you throw 3G into the mix). Compare this to €329 for the iPad mini (€429 with 3G), and you can see that Samsung aim to directly compete with the smaller iPad with their upcoming product. Read more »

After the part-phone-part-tablet amalgamation that was the PadFone, ASUS is now set to announce the, wait for it, FonePad. Unlike the PadFone, however, this one does not slot inside any other device (not yet, at least) and is a standalone Android tablet, based on an Intel processor.

The ASUS FonePad runs on Intel’s low-end Atom Z2420 processor, also known by the name ‘Lexington’.
