ASUS set to announce Intel-based FonePad Android tablet

After the part-phone-part-tablet amalgamation that was the PadFone, ASUS is now set to announce the, wait for it, FonePad. Unlike the PadFone, however, this one does not slot inside any other device (not yet, at least) and is a standalone Android tablet, based on an Intel processor.

The ASUS FonePad runs on Intel’s low-end Atom Z2420 processor, also known by the name ‘Lexington’. It has a single-core, 1.2GHz CPU with Hyper-Threading, PowerVR SGX540 GPU, 3 megapixel rear camera, 1.2 megapixel front facing camera, 1GB of RAM, 8, 16 and 32GB memory options with microSD card slot, 4,270mAh battery and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The device is expected to be announced during MWC later this month and will be going on sale some time during the second quarter of this year.
