Samsung releases a 2000 mAh extended battery for the Galaxy S II, gives you all the juice you need

by 79 comments

We’ve got some great news for those the Samsung Galaxy S II owners (or at least for those that find its battery life not quite satisfactory). The Korean company has just announced an official extended battery for its top dog smartphone that has 2000 mAh worth of juice.

The price that needs to be paid for the extra endurance is an increase in thickness of 1.5mm over the original 1650 mAh battery. Naturally, the new thicker battery doesn’t fit under the old battery cover, so Samsung is shipping the new battery with a replacement back panel. Read more »

Yesterday, we played with the Nokia 701 and we focused mainly on its Symbian Belle software. It turns out that the display is worthy of our attention too – Nokia just tweeted that it offers some good 1,000 nits of brightness.

That means it takes the title of Brightest display off the NOVA display on the LG Optimus Black., which clocked it at “only” 700 nits. Read more »

HTC September 1st event rumor roundup – four droids, four WP7 smartphones and a tablet in the mix

by 27 comments

With this year’s HTC big summer event coming up we thought you might enjoy a quick rumor roundup, so you’d know what to expect. Last year the event saw the announcement of the HTC Desire HD and the HTC Desire Z, which were some of the best Android devices we had seen at the time.

Yet this year the Taiwanese company is almost certainly going to out do itself and make it an even more glamorous event. A good thing too as it will be competing with the other Android top dog for a spot in the limelight – Samsung will be having one of their unpacked events on the exact same day.

No less than six unannounced HTC devices are doing the rounds on the web and we suspect the Taiwanese will be officially unveiling some of them in London. There are three Android smartphones, a couple of WP7 handsets and a tablet. Here’s what they are about: Read more »

Nokia 701 comes to ours, shows off its Belle tricks on video

by 75 comments

It’s Symbian day at our office today as we say hello to another of Nokia’s recently announced smartphones. The Nokia 701 will be one of the flagships of the new Belle edition of Symbian so its role in the company’s future plans is certainly big.

Bringing the new notification area, the customizable widgets and the flat menu, the Belle update certainly brings Symbian a step closer to the competition. In fact, the Nokia 701 felt quite intuitive to use, unlike the early Symbian^3 devices, which were still unable to shake off their non-touch heritage. Read more »

Check out this DIY iPhone camera lens system

by 45 comments

There’s no denying the iPhone 4 has an excellent camera and it turns out, it could get even better with just a little extra effort and the right DIY mindset. Over at Instructables.com we stumbled upon this guy’s DIY camera lens system, designed for the iPhone 4 and we were pretty amazed at how easy it is to create one of your own.

With some tweaks, this simple system would allow you to use lenses with different focal ranges (i.e. different zoom levels) with your iPhone and add cool filters (like a polarizer, for example). And the best part is, you don’t need to lug along this setup all the time. The setup is not fixed to the iPhone itself so you can only take it with you when you know you will be shooting something that’s worth it. Read more »

At first Samsung took its own sweet time bringing the Galaxy S II to the US and now nature decided to play spoilsport. The launch of the Galaxy S II which was meant to happen in New York on August 29, has now been postponed by a day.

The reason for this delay is the Hurricane Irene, which is currently terrorizing its way to the US shores. I’m sure anyone in the hurricane’s path would have bigger things on their minds than the launch of the Galaxy S II Read more »
