Nokia Lumia 920 taken on rough ride through the desert for the ultimate optical stabilization test

by 82 comments

The Nokia Lumia 920 features optical image stabilization (OIS) for its 8MP camera and while Nokia dropped the ball when it was discovered its promo video was not shot with the 920 at all, fans took it on themselves to reshoot the sample. But riding a bike is too mellow, driving a four by four through the desert puts lot more stress on the OIS and is much cooler too.

UK Mobile Review has a series of posts on how its team did the test, culminating in a 8 minute long video of them driving across sand dunes in the desert near Dubai. Read more »

Watch the Galaxy S III take a beating in Samsung’s own lab

by 108 comments

We enjoy putting phones through their paces in our office, but as a manufacturer, Samsung too subjects its phones to a host of reliability tests before launching them on the market. And it’s a different type of tests, mind you. A Samsung made video gives you a rare glimpse behind the curtains of their test facilities.

It’s a video ad, that’s alright, but none of these tests seems staged. I’m sure most (if not all) Samsung phones go through stringent testing procedures like these (even employing the help of “I sat on my phone” buttocks dummy). Key press tests, USB socket rigidness, twisting and flexing, abrasive action by vibrating foreign objects, and even rain – it’s all there. Read more »

by 39 comments

The Sony Xperia go just can’t catch a break – the durable Android handset was tortured in the summer and now the same guys are back to torment it in winter conditions. The poor guy was thrown around, ran over, jumped on, bashed, dunked and put through other trials.

The Xperia go sports an IP67 certification, giving it dust and water resistance, but it also seems to handle subzero temperatures quite well. Read more »

WP8 wars: HTC calls Lumia 920 a fatty, uses pennies to make a point

by 264 comments

Oh No You Didn’t! HTC went on Facebook to flaunt its slender Windows Phone 8X device and take a jab at “that other Windows Phone”Nokia Lumia 920 for being “more than 20 pennies” heavier than the WP 8X.

A bit of research and we find that the American penny (or otherwise one cent) weighs exactly 2.5 grams. So we calculated 20 pennies to be precisely 50 grams, meaning HTC is referring to the 55 g heavier than the WP 8X Lumia 920. Ouch! Read more »

Well, it’s good to know that even Microsoft guys aren’t above throwing gadgets just to see what will happen. Okay, officially it was presented as a reliability test for the Surface tablet, but you can see way too many smiling faces for this to be a boring, repetitive durability test.

The Windows 8 RT-powered slate was shooting 1080p video at the time of the test, which consisted of falling 30″ (76cm) on a hardwood floor. Check out the video of the Surface taking a plunge after the break. Read more »
