AT&T’s brand new LTE network just launched and someone is already putting it to the test. We already got it pitted against the the other LTE network in the US, Verizon’s and the results confirm early indications that the network will be very fast – faster than Verizon’s LTE network even.

Of course, Verizon’s network is older and has a lot more users (that is, it’s under much more load), and yet AT&T’s network lead in both downlink and uplink speeds is impressive. Read more »

Millions this, millions that – the Angry Birds team are probably all patting each other on the back, celebrating passing 350 million downloads. The company’s General Manager Andrew Stalbow bragged about some other numbers – like people spending 300 million minutes each day on the popular bird-flinging game.

We had our first encounter with Symbian Belle when we previewed Nokia 701, but this one was major enough to deserve its own review. So, we decided to take some time and look at Belle all by itself – after all, it would power all of Nokia’s smartphones sooner or later (including the previous-gen N8, E7, C7, C6-01).

The reports of MeeGo’s death are greatly exaggerated says Intel’s Vice President, Doug Fisher. And he should know – he’s also the General Manager of Intel’s System Software Solutions.

Fisher also said that “nothing is changing” and reiterated Intel’s commitment to MeeGo. So, MeeGo fans can breathe a sigh of relief, the second backer of the OS isn’t pulling out like the first one did. Read more »

In movies, someone’s twin usually has a mustache so you can tell them apart. In the case of the Nokia C2-02 and the C2-03, it’s an extra SIM card slot – it makes them different in one aspect, but exactly alike in all others.

Okay, now this is 4G – tests were performed on AT&T’s brand new LTE network using the HTC Jetstream 4G, one of their first LTE-enabled gadgets, and the results are fast enough to make some home Internet plans nervous.

Keep in mind that AT&T’s other 4G (HSPA+ with “enhanced backhaul”) goes up to about 6Mbps real-life speeds. Read more »

The Nokia Sleeping Screen app got updated with a few nice changes. The app adds images, notifications, charging indicators and more to the AMOLED screen of a sleeping Symbian phone.

The updated app can be installed on any internal storage (including the Mass memory) and user-created images are compressed to reduce the app’s footprint. Read more »

Symbian Belle will debut with the Nokia 600, 700 and 701 trio, but the older Symbians should be getting it soon after that. Yet if you are knowledgeable and brave enough to flash your smartphone with a custom ROM, Belle has been available for a few weeks now. And now there’s a newer ROM for the Nokia N8 available that should be much closer to the final deal.

Still, as with all software that isn’t fully finalized, there’s a risk of trouble (some bugs at the least), but Nokia’s Head of Social Media, Mark Squires, has already installed Belle on his N8. Read more »

If the recent TouchPad ordeal is any indication, people want cheap tablets – and Lenovo just showed the IdeaPad A1. It’s not a $99 tablet (cough, HP), but it costs the easy $199 and you get more than a discontinued product running an OS with uncertain future.

Instead, the Lenovo IdeaPad A1 is a 7″ tablet that runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and offers specs very similar to the original Samsung Galaxy Tab, for example. The 7″ screen is an IPS-LCD unit with 600 x 1024 pixels resolution. Read more »

Samsung announced the Series 7 Slate PC – it packs new generation dual-core Intel processors, runs Windows 7 and puts an emphasis on sleek looks and a compact frame.

Not to be confused with the Sliding PC 7 Series, the Samsung Series 7 Slate PC packs a 11.6″ capacitive touch display with 1366×768 pixels resolution and 400 nits of brightness. The tablet comes with a Wacom digitizer. Read more »

Samsung showed off the Series 7 laptops, which will keep the Series 7 Slate PC company. The laptops come in 14″ and 15.6″ flavors and go up to quad-core Core i7 and to make sure the powerful CPU is busy, there’s an 8GB SSD cache for the hard drive.

Prices start at $999 and for that price you get a brushed aluminum body that’s under 2.5cm thick and weighs 2.29kg (for the 15.6″ model, the 14″ model is 1.95kg). Read more »

The Mozilla team is actively working on their Android offering and one of them took the time to show off their latest work – Firefox for Android Honeycomb tablets. The changes affect the UI, making it more Honeycomb-like and more suitable for big screens.

The theme is the first thing that changes – it’s cleaner, so it fits better with the Honeycomb style, which differs quite a bit from the non-tablet versions of the OS. The distinctive Firefox elements have been preserved however (like the tabs, the big back button, etc.). Read more »

Yesterday, we played with the Nokia 701 and we focused mainly on its Symbian Belle software. It turns out that the display is worthy of our attention too – Nokia just tweeted that it offers some good 1,000 nits of brightness.

That means it takes the title of Brightest display off the NOVA display on the LG Optimus Black., which clocked it at “only” 700 nits. Read more »

We’ve seen spy shots of the Nokia 700 in red and white but today we got a friendly visit by the real deal. The 700 is part of the incoming Symbian Belle trio and Nokia touts it as its most eco-friendly and smallest smartphone to date. Actually, they say it’s the world’s smallest smartphone.

At a mere 50cc, the Nokia 700 has a high concentration of features – from a ClearBlack AMOLED display, through 1GHz CPU, eco materials and some NFC magic for super easy Bluetooth pairing. Read more »

LG is bringing the big 3D guns to IFA this year – they will be showcasing a couple of things, both centered at the Optimus 3D. The first is a technology that will convert any 3D game into a stereoscopic 3D game.

LG has also given an Optimus 3D to six National Geographic photographers, who will produce the first 3D images and video for National Geographic. Read more »
