Lifting the curtains on Velvet touch UI for tablets, delivers impressive 3D effects

by 20 comments

The Astonishing Tribe has plenty of impressive UI concepts under their belts (including work on Android, FUSE and many others). Now they’re trying their skilled hands at tablet UIs – what they came up with is called Velvet UI…

The Velvet UI demo is running on a MeeGo tablet by Wind River but apparently it can run on Android and “other tablet OSes” just as fine.

HTC Aria pays us a visit, still trying to tell it apart from the HD mini (Updated!)

by 9 comments

Shhh… The “La donna e mobile” aria is about to start. By which I mean, we just got the HTC Aria and we’re on to unboxing the little fella. We somehow missed how the Aria went from AT&T USA only handset to a worldwide phone, but here it is in our hands – a genuine quad-band Android smartphone with dual-band “Euro” 3G support all in a mini form factor.

But we digress. Here’s what this Android loving HTC HD mini look-alike has to offer…

Apple iPad camera connection kit review

by 874 comments

As a photographer, I was eager to see if my iPad could serve the double purpose of storing my photos and videos when I’m out in the field.

Typically Apple, the iPad camera connection kit was posted in their online store with only the bare minimum of information. I went ahead and bought one anyway and now that I’ve been using it for a week now, I’m ready to pass on everything you may need to know about this little bit of hardware (plus some things you may never need).

Nikon D3100 DSLR unveiled, shoots 1080p video with industry-first continuous Live View auto focus

by 12 comments

Today Nikon updated the lower end of its DSLR spectrum with an impressive new camera that has been rumored for some time now – the D3100. Not only is it Nikon’s first 1080p shooting DSLR camera, but it’s also the industry-first DSLR camera with continuous auto focus (or full-time servo AF, as they call it).

Nikon D3100

Some two years ago, Nikon was the first manufacturer to introduce a video-recording DSLR – the Nikon D90, which I’m still happily using, by the way.

I’m certainly interested in video recording, but the D90 video controls are way too limited and videos turn far too noisy for my liking. Canon has it much better in that department and I neglect my DSLR’s video recording capabilities. But continuous auto focus – now that’s something…

Another day, another Galaxy phone from Samsung. This one is called the Samsung Galaxy U and it should be announced next week in South Korea. Would you be surprised if I told you it runs Android, has a 1GHz processor, an AMOLED screen and a 5MP camera with 720p video capture? Of course, you wouldn’t…

Update: It’s official and the specs check out. It will be available on LG U+ (formerly LG Telecom), though there’s nothing on the price/availability front.

by 12 comments

Blink and you’ll miss it – Amazon UK had HTC Ace/Desire HD listed for sale (actually it was “temporarily out of stock”). It was a slip up, which they quickly corrected, but it does confirm the name and gives us a price point too…

iPhone 4 now plays 1080p videos easily, does some XviD/DivX magic too

by 95 comments

I‘ve recently discovered some hidden iPhone 4 capabilities that simply beg for a blogpost. It’s about the iPhone4 media playback capabilities that are obviously quite limited by none other but the desktop iTunes application.

You probably already know about the app called Filer, we’ve covered it before. The new thing about it is that it just helped me break the iTunes video shackles. My iPhone4 will now play any mp4/mov video up to 1080p resolution – yep, that’s FullHD video, folks.
