Japan’s largest carrier, NTT DoCoMo, just unveiled its new smartphone lineup and as expected the MEDIAS WP N-06C made its first public appearance. The watertight super slim Android device measures an unbelievable 7.9mm all over its body, but for the 5 megapixel camera lens, which protrudes to 9.7mm.

The MEDIAS WP N-06C packs a 4” FWVGA touchscreen and offers support for 14Mbps network transfers. Unfortunately, it only works on FOMA networks so taking one back to your home-country is not an option. Read more »

It’s been a long and tedious ride back to online-hood for the PSN but it seems that it’s finally getting up and running. The amount of countries where the PSN is operational again is huge and ranges across 5 continents. Along these are Europe, Australia, parts of Asia and South and North America.

The other bit of news is that Japan, PSN’s homeland, has refused to turn the ‘ON’ switch on the network until assurance has been made that the necessary precautions and counter-hacking measures have been taken. Read more »

Mike Elgan argues an interesting case and we’d have to agree with him. The potential for failure that comes with Chrome OS and the new Google Chromebooks, is strong. To many, it might be fair to say that Windows is the OS we most commonly live with, despite its many, many flaws; the OS we love to hate if you will and Google feels it’s time to give the people an OS they can be proud of.

Of course Microsoft have the enviable position of having the dominant OS across both the business and personal computing markets and one that Apple and Google would both surely kill for. But what does it take to knock Windows off the top spot? Google think their new way of doing things is the way of the future. A cloud based computing service where all your files, personal information and what-not are suspended in the cloud; the biggest draw being that if your computer were to fail, you lose nothing and could instantly pick up where you left off. No, this is not a joke! I humbly present to you the phone with the shortest spec sheet in well over a decade. In a time, when smartphones boast dual-core processors and HD cameras, John’s Phone has ONLY one function – it can make phone calls.

Now on with those specs. The phone has quad-band GSM support so it will work just about anywhere in the world, except for Korea and Japan. It has only one ringtone complete with a vibration function. A small screen on top of the device displays the inbound and outbound numbers in a call. It also shows a rather unique battery indicator. Credit card giant Visa plans to roll out the most extensive digital wallet system ever attempted by a credit card processor, bank or carrier that will focus on NFC in its implementation across Canada and the US. To kick the service off they need to see a greater adoption of NFC readers from merchants, those willing to pay transaction fees back to Visa or its partner banks whilst using the service.

Visa already uses NFC readers (about 150,000 of them) in conjunction with its PayWave service but this new scheme sees Visa make far greater use of its existing reach. There are currently over 1.8 billion Visa cards in use worldwide, usable at over 30 million stores, with more than 50% of credit card transactions in the US being handled by Visa followed by MasterCard, American Express and Discover as the next largest companies. The Samsung I9100 Galaxy S II has a MHL port – the technology that combines USB and HDMI into the same port. This one is indistinguishable from a microUSB port and works like one with no problem (and as a charger port too).

Today Nokia released information regarding plans for a new Ovi Store concept they intend to push to leading mobile companies Orange France and Deutsche Telekom (the parent company of T-Mobile).

The focus of the Ovi Store operator app store concept is the idea of a ‘store within a store’. Alongside the existing Ovi Store infrastructure, the design is intended to help “provide operators around the world new ways to differentiate, distribute and compete”. Read more »
