Another player has entered the thriving market of semiconductor chips with built-in modems, people. A newly formed joint venture, which includes Fujitsu, NTT DOCOMO, NEC, and Fujitsu Semiconductor, called Access Network Technology Limited aims at capturing a piece of the lucrative pie.

Fujitsu will own 52.8% of the newly minted company, with NTT Docomo, NEC and Fujitsu Semiconductor owning 19.9, 17.8, and 9.5% respectively. Read more »

After investigating complaints from its users getting crazy amounts of spam, Dropbox has announced that emails and passwords stolen from third-party websites have been used to hack into existing Dropbox accounts.

One of the breachеd accounts is a Dropbox employee’s and it happened to contain some project files with a number of Dropbox client email addresses. Hence the spam spree. Read more »

We already know everything there is to know about the upcoming iOS 6 and let’s face it – it’s not going to be the jump Apple is trying to convince us it is. Everything is pretty much the same, with a few tweaks here and there, an overdue Facebook integration and extended Siri functionality.

The major new feature with the iOS 6 is the new Maps app, now with TomTom map data and, of course, the addition of navigation. Well, people do use Siri and navigation for sure, but those people have also been using this same tired iOS interface for 6 years now. They need something new, refreshing and they are not getting it this year.

Amazon unveiled a pretty major update to their Cloud Player service that launched early last year. The update makes the Player more independent from Cloud Drive and offers a free, automatic audio quality upgrade, similar to iTunes Match.

The audio upgrade program is pretty neat – music on your hard drive will be scanned and matching songs (that Amazon has the rights to) will be upgraded to a high-quality 256Kbps version and they won’t even have to be uploaded. Read more »

Google has released the latest version of the desktop Chrome browser, which brings it to version 21.0.1180.60. One of the two important features is the support for the Retina display on the new MacBook Pro. This feature was so far available on the beta version but now those who use the stable release can take advantage of it as well.

Another feature that was only available on the beta version before is support for a camera and microphone. Now thanks to addition of the getUserMedia API, websites will finally have access to your webcam (if you allow them), which will let you use services like Webcam Toy, Magic Xylophone and Sketchbots, to name a few. It seems Google has finally realized no one really wants a $300 bowling ball whose only real abilities are streaming your music and movies from the cloud while completely ignoring all the content on your Android smartphone or tablet and using them just as a glorified remote control.

Microsoft has launched the new Outlook.com, which replaces the existing Hotmail webmail service. The new website makes good use of the Metro UI and also offers users to switch from their current @hotmail.com email addresses to @outlook.com addresses.

Upon opening the new website you’ll notice just how clean and uncluttered the UI is. In fact, it’s so minimalistic that at first glance you’d think you accidentally opened the mobile version of the website. Read more »

Samsung launched its own mobile music service in the United States. The Samsung Music Hub will be initially available on the Galaxy S III smartphones offered by AT&T and US Cellular. Availability for the rest of the flagship’s carrier versions is yet to be announced.

According to some leaked slides, Sony is going to release a new Android tablet under the Xperia brand, thus unifying its smartphone and tablet business into one brand.

If the slides prove to be correct, the tablet is going to feature a 9.4-inch display with a 1280×800 pixels resolution powered by the quad-core Tegra 3 chipset. Read more »

Facebook has revamped the photos view in your profile, which will now show up as a mosaic of different sized photos that roughly resembles the Metro UI on the Windows 8 homescreen. It also looks very similar to the way Google+ arranges images in its photos view.

The new photos view also puts all your pictures in one location. If you want to highlight certain images, you can click on the image and select the Highlight option, at which point that photo’s thumbnail will appear four times bigger than the others. It turns out that, along with the usual spat over current and past products, the legal battle between Apple and Samsung can also offer a look at future releases as well. An upcoming Samsung tablet with the rather unusual screen size of 11.8″ has been revealed in court papers from the Apple v. Samsung trial in California.

The Jelly Bean-based CyanogenMod 10 continues its march in the Android scene and now that Google has released the stock ROM images, developers have everything needed to start porting Android 4.1 to their favorite devices.

The latest ones to start enjoying CyanogenMod 10 are the Samsung Galaxy Fit and Galaxy Mini, devices which otherwise would’ve never seen the light of Android 4.1. And the kicker is, they run it surprisingly well. Read more »
