Skype is not supported on Nokia Belle, keeps crashing on some phones, here’s a solution

by 87 comments

We received several worrying tip in our inbox – Skype isn’t supported on Nokia Belle and it won’t work properly, specifically on the Nokia N8. Sure enough, we found multiple reports of crashes on Belle and going to www.skype.com/m we were greeted with a message that our Belle-running Nokia (for the record, 808 PureView) isn’t a supported device.

A bit of Googling revealed a workaround too, but you better sit down for this because it’s going to sound silly. Read more »

Nokia 808 PureView takes part in our battery triathlon

by 74 comments

When we reviewed the Nokia 808 PureView a lot of our time was spent on the camera. Now that the review is done, we’ve had time to test out the battery – it’s a fine balance between Symbian’s low requirements and the relatively small 1400mAh battery.

The 808 PureView is far from the most compact phone around, so it’s natural to think that Nokia could have fit a bigger battery. But maybe they didn’t need to, find out after the jump. Read more »

Nokia 808 PureView takes an impressive video of a racing catamaran

by 32 comments

After getting so much praise for its incredible 41MP camera, the Nokia 808 PureView decided to take a well deserved vacation. Instead of spending all day on the beach though, the 808 found itself shooting a video of the racing catamaran Nacra Infusion MKII.

The impressive video you are about to see was actually shot using two 808 PureView units tightly packed into a plastic bag with holes for the lenses. Read more »

Nokia 808 PureView vs Olympus E-PL2 vs Canon 5D Mark III vs Apple iPhone 4S: 38MP shootout

by 342 comments

After seeing the Nokia 808 PureView ace our blind test and comfortably beat even a Micro Four Thirds camera, many of you wanted to see how its 41MP sensor does against higher res cameras. We now suggest you take a comfortable seat and get ready to find the answer.

This time we used the full resolution mode on Nokia 808 PureView, which is the only one that shows the true capabilities of the monster sensor. We shot the same image with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, which is our workhorse DSLR, the Olympus E-PL2 large-sensor interchangeable lens camera, which was soundly trashed in the blind test and the Apple iPhone 4S, which should serve as a reference for the improvement the Nokia 808 brings to the smartphone world. The Nokia 808 PureView just went on sale and we showed you photos of its first unboxing. Among the pictures you could see two of the optional accessories of the smartphone – the tripod mount and the protector case.

Nokia talks about the 808 PureView camera in detail on a video shot entirely on it

by 60 comments

We have seen Nokia talk about the 808 PureView camera before. We have also seen a sample video shot on the 808 PureView. Now we have a video shot entirely on the 808 PureView, where Nokia’s team of engineers who worked on the phone talk about their experience.

While most of what we see in the video is something we have already read before, the important thing here is that video has been shot on the phone itself. As you can expect, the video quality is really good for a phone. So good, in fact, that after a certain point you completely forget that the video has been shot on a phone and only pay attention to what the people in the video are saying. Read more »

Glimpses of a Finnish Spring – a spectacular video shot with the 808 PureView

by 90 comments

A lucky YouTube user got his hands on a Nokia 808 PureView and to our delight focused on its camcorder abilities instead of its imaging skills.

He shot a series of video clips at different scene modes with the Nokia 808 PureView and a tripod, and patched them into one clip using the Sony Vegas editing software. Read more »

Time lapse video shot with Nokia 808 PureView is gorgeous, shows off its zoom capabilities

by 27 comments

Nokia released a new video shot with their 808 PureView monster of a cameraphone and it’s awesome. It’s a time-lapse video shot in South Africa and it really highlights the power of the creative mode feature – the mode that uses oversampling to improve quality and allow for lossless digital zoom.

Check out the video after the break, just make sure to view it in 1080p and in fullscreen so you can enjoy it in its full shine. Read more »

Viber for Symbian confirmed, Maemo stays ignored in the corner

by 40 comments

Symbian Nokia OS fans, rejoice! Viber officially confirmed that its famous free calling app will be getting support for your platform soon.

The good news came, weirdly, from the Maemo community forum, but since they were delivered directly by Viber representatives they are as official as it gets. Ever since the big announcement at the MWC last month Nokia has steadily (and sneakily) released additional camera samples from the Nokia 808 PureView than what they showed at the event. We have covered some of those before but today we have some more to share with you.

For these bunch of photos, Nokia has moved from the rocky mountains to a sandy beach. As before these images are in bright sunlight so you cannot assess low light performance but it does give you a look at some of the other abilities of the camera. Read more »
