The Skype app for Android has received an update and the big new feature is the ability to send photos, videos and files across to your contacts.

Skype has also made the auto sign-in and sign-out easier, improved the look and feel of the app, added voicemail improvements and improved the video quality on Tegra 2 devices. Read more »

Microsoft has just added some improvements to its SkyDrive service, making it play nice with 3rd party apps. SkyDrive, which is one of the key selling points of Windows Phone platform, now grants non-Microsoft apps full access to SkyDrive, allowing them to upload and share all kinds of files.

This should allow the development of much richer WP apps that don’t take a lot of space. And since the Microsoft platform refuses to allow user replacement of the microSD cards (where available), storage is quite valuable there. Read more »

Flipboard is a digital magazine-like application that combines all of your Facebook, Twitter, website news, articles, photos and more into one live feed for simple (and gorgeous) browsing from one dedicated place. It used to be an iPad exclusive up until the other day when Flipboard launched a version for the iPhone too and we thought we’d take it for a spin and do a little impromptu review of it.

Once the app launched yesterday things went seriously wrong and Flipboard’s servers were overwhelmed by the incredible demand. Today Flipboard updated the app and things started working again. iBooks for iOS just got a major update in time for the holiday season. Version 1.5 brings a welcome new feature set to the eReader app, including new view modes, new fonts and notable improvements on existing features too.

A group of Chinese hackers who go by the name ‘CD-Team’ have created a working iteration of the iPhone 4S‘s well known voice assistant, Siri. Since the inclusion of Siri on the iPhone 4S, hackers have been trying to modify, hack or in some way manipulate the underlying coding so that the unique service can run on other iOS-endowed devices, but as of yet, we haven’t seen a successful release.

This latest solution only currently works on the iPhone 4 and the iPod Touch 4G with a jailbroken version of either iOS 5.0 or iOS 5.0.1, so if you were hoping for some Siri action from your iPhone 3GS or your iPad 2, you’re going to find yourself waiting a very long time. Read more »

Google and Australian telecommunications company Telstra have joined forces to launch the world’s first store dedicated to Android. Called the Androidland, it’s not just a place to buy Android devices but also where you can experience all the different features in the OS and just enjoy yourself.

There is a lot to do in this Android-themed store, decked in the traditional Android green color. You can play Angry Birds on a giant touchscreen display, Androidify yourself or check out the world on a massive display using Google Earth. They have even gone as far as to have a gingerbread scent in the store and a grass scent where there is grass. And then of course, you have handsets from all the major manufacturers, which you can try out for yourself. Read more »

Box.net is getting pretty aggressive – after the recent Sony Ericsson deal, now LG are getting 50GB of free cloud storage too. Owners of Android-running LGs who install Box on their phones between November 30 2011 and March 31 2012 will get the extra storage for free (50GB up from the usual free 5GB).

It’s not a limited time offer either, like the HTC/Dropbox offer. You get to keep your 50 gigs for as long as you have the account. There’s still some fine print though. Read more »

The Digital Living Network Alliance announced that it has incorporated the Wi-Fi Direct technology into the DLNA standard, making ad-hoc streaming of your multimedia content a piece of cake.

In effect this means that soon you will be able to stream content from one of your DLNA devices to another without the trouble of setting up a Wi-Fi network. It will work in much the same way Bluetooth does nowadays, which is about as convenient as we can imagine. Read more »

When Google announced their music service at the I/O conference earlier this year, it came with their famous beta tags. It only allowed you to upload up to 20,000 of your own tracks to Google’s servers and then stream it from other devices anytime you want. Today, at their ‘These Go To Eleven‘ event, Google released the final version of the Google Music service.

So what are the new features? Well, as before, you can still upload your music to Google’s servers and store it there but now you can also purchase new music. Read more »

The latest version of Nokia Maps, 3.08.203, has just graduated from Beta and is now being seeded to Symbian-running smartphones around the globe. You can get it right now from the software update tool on your device or via the Nokia Suite.

The new Maps app brings a beautiful little weather app to help you plan for the day by the hour or give you a handy five-day overview. It also comes with live traffic routing info in the Drive start screen, a cleaner UI and easier-to-read search results. Read more »

Adobe has just unleashed its range of Touch Apps on Android for all the creative people out there who want to use their tablets for more than just content consumption. These apps will be a key component in Adobe’s upcoming Creative Cloud service that will be released next year, that will allow sharing and viewing of the content created using these apps on multiple devices.

Samsung is launching their ChatON service today – a free service that lets you send text messages (including group chat), multimedia and even hand-drawn animated messages. The Android app is live now and there’s a Bada app incoming. Some feature phones are getting it too.

Basically, ChatON is Samsung’s answer to iMessage and BBM, with the added advantage of covering more platforms than just iOS and BlackBerry. Both platform will be supported by ChatON in the future. Read more »

If you’re an iPhone 4 user who was contemplating upgrading to the iPhone 4S after watching the impressive Siri demo then you might want to hold on to your current phone a little longer. Because as it turns out you can make Siri work on the iPhone 4, sort of.

The hack you see below was performed by developer Steven Troughton-Smith who has been working for 9to5Mac to get Siri working on the iPhone 4. This was accomplished by copying the iPhone 4S Siri and Springboard files on to the iPhone 4. Read more »
