by 106 comments

4K video recording has started to become a staple feature of all the flagship Android smartphone these days. But the version of 4K that these phones record in is the UHD resolution, or the ones used by 4K televisions, and is exactly four times the resolution of full HD.

But there is another version of 4K and that is DCI 4K, which is what the professional cinema cameras use while recording in 4K. The difference here is the added width; whereas UHD is 3840×2160, DCI 4K is 4096×2160. But while several smartphones record in UHD, the OnePlus One is the first to record in DCI 4K. Read more »

Sharing a name with a popular HTC handset we know the OnePlus One has some proving to do but covers the right basics as a start. For one it brings a capable Snapdragon 801 chipset, a 5.5″ 1080p display and a 4K-enabled 13 MP snapper. Adding to a good foundation the One could also be the Nexus fan’s dream come true with a tailor-made CyanogenMod 11 OS for a clean, near-stock Android KitKat 4.4.2 experience. Read more »

Android L release: Flashing at first sight

by 89 comments

The Android L release is Google’s new look for the operating system since Holo. It features a new design language called Material Design which is far more than a fresh coat of paint for the most popular mobile operating system out there.

Hidden behind the “L release” moniker probably sits the Android 5.0 version number, which will carry a desert name starting with L. But that’s not important, really, as the “L release” brings a lot of new things to the table, both inside and out.
