by 68 comments

It’s been a long time coming, but the latest usage statistics from Net Applications show that iOS has fallen behind Android in terms of total active usage.

While Android has long since surpassed Apple’s offering in terms of market share, this is the first time that Google’s mobile OS is also being used more than iOS. Read more »

It’s time we put the Xiaomi data leaking controversy behind us [EDITORIAL]

by 113 comments

In the past few days we’ve been witnessing lots of controversy regarding evidence that the phone manufacturer Xiaomi is sending your personal data to a Chinese server. A lot has been written about that – we’ve heard both sides of the story as Xiaomi representatives are trying to put down the wild fire and assure everyone that this is not the case.

We just wanted to make it clear that as an editorial team we stand behind them and for us it seems there is no truth to these allegations. Unfortunately, we may have helped aggravate the situation by reporting it rather… bluntly. Read more »

Three inTouch lets you make calls and send texts when there’s no cell signal

by 23 comments

Three UK just announced inTouch – an app for Android and iOS that can route your calls and texts over a Wi-Fi network. This isn’t like Skype or Viber, no this is for regular calls and texts that would normally go through the GSM network (they even come out of your monthly plan).

It’s not a new feature – O2 UK and T-Mobile US has been offering it for a while now – but few phones support it. Read more »

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini goes through a teardown

by 10 comments

The iFixit team has decided to do a teardown on the Galaxy S5′s little brother and see if the similarities on the outside continue with the internal design too.

And as you can probably guess, Samsung didn’t feel the need to rethink everything from scratch and the Galaxy S5 Mni shares the same negative and positive repair traits as its bigger sibling. Read more »

HTC Desire 616 dual sim hands-on

by 7 comments

The HTC Desire 616 dual sim is like a smaller version of the Desire 816 but it has an attention-grabbing octa-core processor. And the processor has eight Cortex-A7 cores instead of big.LITTLE architecture.

The Desire 616 has a large screen for a mid-ranger but with 720p resolution it won’t be fighting flagships any time soon. This fits the style of smartphone popular in East Asia – screen size takes precedence over resolution, dual-SIM is a must and the more cores the better. Read more »

HTC One (E8) hands-on

by 62 comments

Whether you know it as the HTC One Vogue or the HTC One Ace, the One (E8) is here to put an end to HTC’s usage of low-res cameras… and metal unibodies.

The HTC One (E8) is a plastic variant of the HTC One (M8) that retains almost all aspects of the flagship’s premium package but asks significantly lower at retail. The front is still adorned by a 5″ Super LCD3 of 1080p resolution, the chipset is still a Snapdragon 801, the speakers are still stereo BoomSound and the software is still Sense 6 on top of Android 4.4.2 KitKat. Indian customers order XOLO Q900s Windows Phone, receive Android version

by 77 comments

Well, this is an odd one. It looks like Flipkart, India’s biggest online retailer, has mistakenly sent people who ordered the new XOLO Win Q900s an Android-running version of the device. To be clear, the XOLO Win Q900s should run Windows Phone 8.1, the latest version of Microsoft’s mobile OS.

So imagine the surprise (if not anger) you’d feel were you to order one of those, only to receive something that runs Android. Read more »

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has one of the best camera in the business, capable of taking great stills as well as videos. To show it off further, Samsung has released a new video, shot entirely on the phone.

Microsoft thinks the Nokia Lumia 530 is great, has 10 reasons to back up that claim

by 145 comments

Microsoft’s mobile division sure seems to be proud of the recently unveiled Nokia Lumia 530. This, you may remember, is the successor to the best selling Lumia 520, and it will become available in August.

As you might expect, the ten reasons that Microsoft lists for why the Lumia 530 is simply great aren’t extremely objective, not all of them anyway. But let’s take them one by one. Read more »

Nokia creates an organic charger for the Lumia 930

by 23 comments

Nokia has set up an interesting project to promote the Lumia 930 in the UK. What seems to be a product of a joint meeting with Greenpeace is actually a giant wall made of potatoes and apples. Why? To charge up a phone.

Some of you may know this, but for others this is a headscratcher. The process of charging the battery using potatoes and apples is possible thanks to the chemicals inside them, which help transfer energy via the metal wires. Read more »

Rovio releases first ‘Angry Birds Transformers’ teaser trailer

by 25 comments

Few weeks back we talked about Rovio’s upcoming Angry Birds Transformers (sigh) game. Other than telling the game is coming soon, no other details were provided back then.

Rovio has now released a new trailer for the game. Unfortunately, it doesn’t show much either. The CGI trailer shows the red bird that also looks like Optimus Prime fighting bad pigs. He can obviously transform from one form to another. Oddly enough, he also has a pig Transformer fighting alongside him, fighting another pig Transformer. Read more »
