Google’s new photo-sharing service Photovine has just landed in the App Store. Strangely enough, Google has picked iOS over its own Android to be the carrier of the first mobile app of its new service.

So here’s the deal with this new social/photo service that Google is launching. You can create vines of photos by uploading one and giving it a caption. Your friends are than able to add more shots to the vine, making it a constantly growing album. Read more »

A couple weeks ago we heard this particularly juicy rumor about the Apple MacBook Air duo getting i7 CPUs and much faster storage. Well according to some more recent information that we stumbled upon, we are just about to find out if that’s true next week.

The tech website All things D claims that the new MacBook Airs will be unveiled some time next week (Thursday or Friday, most likely). The gossip is said to come from several sources close to Apple so it might not be a complete shot in the dark. Read more »

A new 12-inch netbook by Asus has just been spotted at an Italian online retailer’s page and it appears ready to make you rethink your idea of cheap. While right now you can hardly go much lower than €450 for a dual-core netbook with 12″ screen, the Asus 1215P asking price is just under €280.

Of course, a portion of the savings is due to the fact that the 1215P is running Linux, rather than Windows, but even factoring that in, its unbelievably cheap. For that kind of cash you are getting a 1.50 GHz dual-core Atom N550, 2 gigs of RAM and a 320GB hard drive on a 12-inch screen chassis. Read more »

Two independent analyst companies just published their reports on the computer market in the US and they both show that Apple is now the third largest vendor in the country. The Cupertino-based company has now slotted in front of Toshiba and Acer in terms of units shipped.

Along with Apple, Toshiba is the only other company, which has increased its sales in Q2 2011, compared to Q2 2010. The rest have all taken a step backwards, with Acer taking a particularly painful hit of 22.6% or 25.4%, depending on who you believe. Read more »

Apple has altered the currency conversion rates for some of its international App Stores, which has led to changes in pricing for users outside the US. Some countries, like Australia, have benefited from the change, while others, like the UK have seen the iOS app prices rise.

The cheapest paid apps in Great Britain are now going for 69p, rather than 59p, which is an almost 17% increase. The positive change in Australia is by about the same margin, the former 1.19 AUD apps now going for 99 Australian cents. Read more »

Back in April when the iPhone secret location tracking took over the media attention, Apple was quick to dismiss it as a non-issue and said it wasn’t doing anything wrong. However, that’s not what the Changwon District Court in Sourth Korea thinks as it has just ordered the Cupertino-based company to pay compensation to a user because of it.

In fact Reuters reports that Apple has already made the payment of $946 to Mr. Hyung-suk (not surprisingly, a lawyer himself). And while that kind of cash will hardly make Steve Jobs lose his sleep, what will follow next might. Apparently, the law firm that won the case is gearing up to launch a class action against Apple. Photography fans and Rude Goldberg machines fans checks this out. We stumbled upon the most complex setup, designed to perform the simplest of tasks – take a portrait photo. Created using almost exclusively photography gear this is certainly going to make every camera enthusiast tremble.

Obviously the amount of effort that went into designing this is mind-blowing, and the cost of the gear used could probably buy you a decent family sedan. And since words couldn’t possibly describe all the action that’s going on in the video, we aren’t even going to try. Read more »

The place to get Blackberry apps, the App World, has just rounded off its first full billion of downloads. It took the BlackBerry app repository a little over two years to achieve this feat. Of course, the download rate is speeding up and if the current download rate (3 million per day) is retained, the next billion should come in less than half that time.

However, impressive as those numbers might sound in isolation, they aren’t quite as good as those of some other app stores out there. Read more »

The Anna update brings quite a lot of changes to the Symbian platform and Nokia is obviously worried that some of them might go unnoticed by the users. That’s why the company has released yet another video demonstrating the latest version of their mobile OS.

HP and AT&T just announced that the US carrier will be getting a pimped up version of the TouchPad in time for the back-to-school season. The AT&T-edition of the webOS slate will have its dual-core CPU clocked at 1.5GHz, rather than the 1.2GHz of the regular one.

The AT&T-bound TouchPad will also be packing 4G connectivity, which will make it the first version of the slate with network data connectivity. Unfortunately, this won’t be an LTE radio, but a 3G one with 21 Mbps HSPA capabilities, but that’s still cool. Read more »

Android Honeycomb didn’t have the best of starts in terms of performance, but Google is obviously dead set on fixing the issues as quickly as possible. The company already released the 3.1 update, which was a nice step forward and now, just five months after the XOOM was announced, we are getting a second Honeycomb update.

The update, which pushes the Android version number to 3.2, is already being seeded to Wi-Fi-only XOOM units. In addition to bringing further performance improvements and bugfixes the HTJ85B release brings the long-awaited SD card support. It will also allow apps that aren’t designed for the high-res Android tablet screens to be zoomed to fill the entire screen. Read more »

Nokia is really going hard into the augmented reality game. Just last week they unveiled their Nokia 3D World Gaze app and now we are getting a public beta of Nokia Live View.

The Nokia Live View certainly seems like the more useful of the two augmented reality browsers. Unlike the 3D World Gaze, which focused only on giving you information about the world around you, Live View also lets you interact with it. Read more »

The iPhone Dev Team has scored yet another point in their fight against Apple for keeping iOS free of its chains. It only took them a few hours after the latest iOS 5 beta was released to prepare the Snowbreeze update, which jailbreaks it.

Unfortunately, owners of the iPhone 3GS units with the old bootrom are the only ones, who will get untethered start-up for their devices after the jailbreak. iPhone 4, iPod Touch, iPad and newer-bootrom iPhone 3GS owners will have to hook up their device to a computer every time they need to boot into jailbroken state. Microsoft’s CEO took the stage during the company’s Worldwide Partner Conference, which is held this week in Los Angeles, and revealed some interesting bits about the company’s mobile platform. Steve Ballmer admitted that Windows Phone 7 hasn’t been particularly successful yet and in a year its market share has gone “from very small to… very small”.

And while those are hardly the words Microsoft partners were hoping to hear, Ballmer remains optimistic about WP7′s prospects. Expectations are that more users and developers will be drawn to the platform in the years to come and it will be able to compete with the Android and iOS behemoths. Read more »

Asus has just spilled the beans of the pricing of the 3G-enabled version of their Transformer tablet. The Taiwanese company will charge you an extra €100 for the SIM card slot of the popular Android slate with an optional keyboard.

So the 16GB Transformer with 3G connectivity will set you back €500, while a 32GB unit will go for €600. Seeing that the Transformer was somewhat cheaper than most of its competitors, we were hoping that Asus won’t stick to the usual practice and demand €100 for the network connectivity, but alas.
