by 11 comments

What can you fit in the spare tire compartment besides a spare tire? How about the VW Bik.e (they pronounce it “e bike”), an electric bike that can be folded to fit snuggly in the spare tire compartment and get charged in the same time.

Word on the street is that Microsoft gave up on their rumored Courier tablet. But as it turns out, this isn’t the only company that is going to change its plans of upcoming tablet computers. Rumor has it that we won’t see the highly anticipated Windows-7-based HP Slate either. Sigh!

Sony Dash launches, it’s a Personal Internet Viewer that misses the point

by 320 comments

Sony just launched the Sony Dash – a “Personal Internet Viewer” (it’s sort of like an Internet-oriented tablet). Not bad for 200 US dollars, right? It would have been if there weren’t a key Internet application missing…

The Sony Dash is like a combo between a tablet and an bedside alarm clock from the future. It has a 7” WVGA capacitive touchscreen with multi-touch capabilities and Wi-Fi connectivity (b and g).

Steve Jobs on the 6 grudges Apple holds against Flash

by 1,156 comments

“Flash is the number one reason Macs crash.”, Jobs says, “We don’t want to reduce the reliability and security of our iPhones, iPods and iPads by adding Flash.” You bet they don’t.

Apple like to have things under control – especially user experience. But there’s more to that and Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs, thought the issue is important enough to deserve a full press release that explains 6 reasonable sounding points in favor of their decision.

It’s an interesting read – and definitely one that’s been written by a true essay master, so I bet you guys would love to have a look at it in detail. BTW, it’s really strange of him publishing this semi-official/semi-personal statement on Flash, while still avoiding the more topical issue of the lost iPhone prototype and the events that followed. Anyway, check out the stuff yourselves.

Google Maps gains Earth view, lets you gawk at 3D buildings in your browser

by 1 comments

Google really like to keep as many things running in the browser as they can – the latest enhancement to what you can do in a browser is browse Google Earth content straight from the Google Maps page…

The new Earth view in Google Maps requires a plug-in to run though, we’ve still got some way to go before those JavaScript 3D standards are finalized. That plug-in has been out for about two years but its testing period has ended and it has been moved to its rightful place – besides the Map and Satellite views in Google Maps. Read more »

How LARGE is the Nokia N8 large image sensor? Updated!

by 149 comments

Earlier today Nokia announced their latest multimedia flagship, the N8 and said that it packs a large sensor that rivals those found in compact digital cameras. But they never actually quoted the exact sensor size and since compact cameras sensors go from 1/3″ through 1/2.5″ to 1/1.6″ in diagonal (from smallest to largest) I felt the need to do the math and find out where exactly the Nokia N8 ranks.

After all 1/2.5″ sensors have been around the mobile industry for a while now – Nokia N95 had a sensor about that size some 3 years ago. Yet, it turns out that Nokia did have something to boast about with the Nokia N8. Read more »

How to fry an egg: buy an Apple MacBook Pro with the Intel Core i7 inside…

by 48 comments

Intel Core i7 CPUs are fast. But they might also turn your computer into a stove due to the generated heat. Apparently the Core-i7-equipped MacBook Pros (like the rest of the unibody MacBooks), which rely only on their metal casings to keep them from overheating (they’re like giant heatsinks), allow the temperature of the CPU reach a 100 degrees Celsius.
