Qualcomm has been among the most successful chip manufacturer as of late, but I don’t think many of you can name more than a couple of their products. The Snapdragon brand name is all fine, but the different chipsets within the family were so confusingly named that you couldn’t tell which one has a high-end dual core CPU and which is designed for the run-of-the-mill handsets.

Skype has just added video calling support for an additional 17 popular droids with its latest ver. 2.1 for Android. Some of them are the HTC Flyer slate, Samsung Galaxy S II, the Xperia PLAY and more.

The minimum requirement you have to cover is Android version 2.2 (Froyo) or above and even if your device isn’t blessed to be in the list of newly supported droids you should be able to enable video chat through the app’s settings. Keep in mind that this will allow only rear camera video calling and you’ll need 2.3 Gingerbread and beyond to enjoy true front-facing camera chat support. Sorry to break the bad news to you, but it seems that the iPad 3 with a Retina display isn’t going to happen this year. Earlier, rumors pointed at the arrival of another Apple slate later this year with four times the resolution of its predecessor, but it seems we won’t be in luck this time.

And the reason is quite simple – touchscreen and display manufacturers will be unable to produce the parts for the high-res iPad 3 until sometime in 2012 (more pessimistic predictions even say the second half of next year). Read more »

We have some bad news to those of you eager to taste some quad-core mobile action. Nvidia has confirmed that it will be delaying its Kal-El platform by a couple of months and tablets with it will only be available in Fall, rather than this month.

And the first smartphones based on the Kal-El will only become available around CES next year. Of course, extending the wait isn’t ideal, but considering that the quad-core Nvidia Kal-El should bring a 5x performance improvement over Tegra 2, we would still be getting better treatment than the Moore’s law would suggest. Find My iPhone, that convenient service from Apple that you wish you would never have to use, has found its way to the Mac. Aptly renamed to Find My Mac, this new service does what it did on the iPhone, it helps you track down your Mac in case you have lost it.

The service is currently available only to developers who have access to the iCloud service. Along with being able to locate your Mac, Find My Mac can also play a sound, send a message, remotely lock it and even wipe the hard drive clean to prevent unauthorized access. Read more »

The BlackBerry Playbook won’t have Android apps support until late fall. This is a bummer for many and could worsen the prospects of RIM’s Playbook even more so.

The Playbook is RIM’s first slate and its user interface relies on the proprietary QNX platform. It’s a smart OS platform alright, but it’s light years behind Android or iOS in terms of available third-party apps. The lack of strong app support is a huge handicap for any new OS nowadays. The Nokia has inspired young talents to create cool videos with its N8 camera phone for a while now. This is the latest in a line of many very cool videos and the largest in scale stop-motion animation shot with the Nokia N8.

The plot is marine in essence – a fisherman in his small boat is taken on a perilous journey after he gets swallowed by a giant fish. You can check out the making of if you’re interested in making your own stop-motion video. The tricky part is that little bot is actually a life-size, real vessel. RIM is throwing a BlackBerry media event tomorrow in London and it’s most probably about the UK launch of the BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900. We still don’t have the event program confirmed however initial rumors suggest just that.

The launch of the BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 is one of the most highly anticipated BlackBerry events this year. Hopefully, the wait will be over and the phone will finally launch tomorrow.

Now it’s been a while since we last saw Firefox get a facelift, but you can bet the guys over at the Mozilla camp are hard at work designing the next-gen Firefox.

The design mockups that I am about to show you say a lot about the direction the team is going. The next major Firefox edition will have a minimalistic, button-less face where the various buttons are cleverly situated along the nooks and crannies of the Menu shortcut and the tabs so that less space is wasted.

I really dig the direction the Mac OS version is going in and though I’m not familiar with the current design on this platform, I really hope we see more of that mojo transferred to Windows too. Read more »

It’s that time again, folks – the time for the iPhone 5 rumor of the week. This time we came across some snapshots of a mysterious iPhone with a design unseen so far anywhere. So, naturally, the question is whether this 64GB would-be iPhone is the real deal or not – is this the fabled new design the next generation iPhone will offer?

Well, here are some arguments that just quickly popped to my mind – the volume keys are again a single piece – which is a step backward from the current design logic. The device looks tangibly thicker than the iPhone 4 (which is just 9.3mm) – a definite no-no in today’s tech design trends.

The outer rim of the phone doesn’t look like an antenna or even made out of steel (it just looks plastic – see how the Apple logo doesn’t seem reflective) so I can only assume this thing’s fake.

Oh, and also look at the bezel around the screen – and there’s also considerable slack space above the home button. And finally the sign – “Designed by APOLLO in California” doesn’t scream legitimate either. Read more »
