In the midst of all the super phones we’re eagerly watching pop out of every manufacturer’s hat, it’s nice to take a little breather by enjoying some of the cool gadgets that play the sidekick role.

If you remember the Sony Ericsson LiveView you’d know that it was an Android-driven wristwatch of sorts that could show you notifications, wake you up and let you control your smartphone without taking it out of your backpack. OCZ Lightfoot SSD boasts Thunderbolt connectivity, speeds beyond belief

OCZ opened their CES 2012 tally by unveiling a new member of their SSD lineup. Dubbed Lightfoot, the new OCZ SSD comes with a twist – it uses Thunderbolt as its only connectivity option.

Android-powered webcam-like device, the Samsung inTouch, adds Smart TV magic to your boring HDTV

I guess I’m not the only one who has a relatively new HDTV that doesn’t have fancy “Smart TV” or “Connected TV” functionality and thinks the price of the upgrade isn’t worth it. The Samsung inTouch is a curious Android-powered device that solves this problem by adding such functionality (Skype, YouTube, etc.) to any TV with an HDMI port.

It looks like a web cam and indeed features a 3MP camera that can be used for snapping photos or placing 720p video calls on Skype (the inTouch has its own microphone for that). Read more »

Parrot shows AR.Drone 2.0 at CES – now with 720p video recording, easy sharing and sturdier hardware

Two years after the original, the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 ascends the CES stage. The new version is easier to fly yet more capable than its predecessor. It packs an upgraded camera that shoots HD videos and photos in-flight, as well as a tougher exterior and new sensors.

The apps which control the drone are getting an update to support the new functionality – the update should hit the iOS and Android versions at the same time. The new app makes sharing the videos you shoot easier – one tap lets you share and upload to YouTube. Read more »

Tablets and smartphones to be equipped with high-speed USB 3.0 by the end of the year, early next year

This just in from the USB standards setting organization – USB 3.0 should begin rolling out to smartphones and tablets before the end of this year or early next year.

Now don’t expect to see full-sized USB ports on your next smartphone – the upgrade should be in the form of USB 3.0-supporting microUSB ports to meet the demands of thin industrial design. Read more »

Gigabyte keeps Atom dream alive with Cedar Trail powered T1006M convertibe netbook and tablet, Windows 7 on board

Gigabyte is showing off two new devices at CES – the T1006M, a Windows 7 convertible netbook-tablet, and the S1081, a pure Windows 7 tablet. Both have 10.1″ capacitive multi-touch touchscreens outside and Intel’s latest Cedar Trail Atom dual-core processors inside.

Where they differ is the keyboard. The T1006M has one, but unlike traditional netbooks, you can quickly transform it into a tablet by turning the screen around. Impressively, its 10.1″ screen has a 1366×768 pixel resolution, typically found in larger displays. Read more »

Lenovo IdeaPad U310 and U410 new Ultrabook laptops get under the spotlight

The competition for the best ultrabook at CES 2012 has begun, and Lenovo entered it with the unveiling of the IdeaPad U310 and U410.

The Lenovo U310 is 0.7″ (18mm) thick and weighs 3.74lbs (1.7kg) whilst the U410 is a pinch thicker at 0.83″ (21mm) and just slightly heavier, weighing in at 4.18lbs (1.9kg). Read more »

Acer announces Aspire S5 and Aspire Timeline Ultra Ultrabooks, claims the former to be the world’s thinnest

Acer has announced two very thin and light Ultrabooks at CES. The first one is the Aspire S5, which Acer claims to be the thinnest in the world. The Ultrabook uses magnesium alloy and brushed metal for the body, which is only 15mm at the thickest point and weighs 1.35kg (2.97 pounds).

Another highlight of this machine is that it is one of the first notebooks to be announced with a Thunderbolt port and will be pairing it with USB 3.0 and HDMI ports on the back. Inside you will find Intel Core series processors, SSD storage and a PowerSmart battery pack that claims to have a life cycle which is three times longer than that of traditional battery packs. Acer showcases the new Iconia Tab A700, comes with a quad-core processor and a full HD display

We’ve been hearing about the Acer Iconia Tab A700 since November last year. Acer has finally decided to take the wraps off the device and showcase it at this year’s CES.

The biggest rumor was that the A700 would have a full HD display and thankfully that has come true. The A700 has a 10.1-inch, 1920 x 1200 resolution display, that’s the highest of any tablet available right now, including the current Android tablet champ, the ASUS Transformer Prime. Read more »

Promoting theft doesn’t seem like the most obvious marketing strategy, but LG clearly like to go against the grain if this new ad is anything to go by.

Vizio to enter computer segment with two AIOs and three notebooks, aims to disrupt it with ultra-low prices

Vizio is an American consumer electronics brand known for their highly-competitive prices that have made them such a hit in the continent. Now they plan to enter the Windows-based computer segment with these ultra-stylish notebooks and All In Ones (AIO).

There will be five models on sale, two of which will be AIOs, one with a 24-inch display and the other with a 27-inch display and the other three will be notebooks. Two of these will be Ultrabooks with a 14-inch and a 15.6-inch display and the last one is a regular 15.6-inch notebook. Read more »

The announcement of the Apple iPad 3 is just a few months away now, so naturally the rumor train is starting to pick up speed. In today’s scoop we are talking display, camera and the fate of the current iPad after the release of its successor.

Once again, we are hearing that the iPad 3 will have four times the resolution of the iPad 2, which will reportedly be marketed as Retina display. Quadrupling the iPad 2 resolution on the same screen estate will give you pixel density of 264 ppi, which on a screen this big should feel as good as the 326ppi of the last two iPhones. Read more »
