Live video streaming app Meerkat, which is currently iOS only and has got a lot of coverage recently, is finally coming to Android. In a tweet sent out yesterday, the company announced that it’s opening up the Android version of the app to external beta testers.

To join the Meerkat Android Beta program, head over to a Google Docs form (click the Source 2 link below), and fill in the required information, which includes your name, Twitter handle, and email. It isn’t yet clear when the app will be released to everyone though. Read more »

Internet giant Yahoo may be developing a messaging application that will not only include text messaging features, but will also let you share live as well as recorded video, according to a report from The Information.

“[Yahoo] will unveil a mobile app that combines live and recorded video and text, blending aspects of live video apps like Meerkat, YouNow, and Skype and the recorded video messages popularized by Snapchat,” the report said, adding that the app will be unveiled later this quarter. Read more »

Earlier this year, MediaTek announced its silicon roadmap in order to shake up the competition bay which mostly includes Samsung and Qualcomm. That initial buzz of the 10-core and 12-core Helios chipsets may have felt like a goof while octa-core chips are just setting their foot. But by the year end, we may expect to see a 10-core chipset.

MediaTek showed its 10-core Helios X20 to select handset makers such as Xiaomi, Vivo, and other select members yesterday at a special event. Net neutrality has been a hot topic of debate in India the last couple of weeks. The issue started after Airtel announced plans of charging VoIP calls separately and later snowballed into a larger movement when the company announced free access to Flipkart on its network.

But Airtel wasn’t the only one violating net neutrality laws. Facebook’s internet.org intiiative, in collaboration with Reliance, did the same, giving free access to several sites to those on Reliance’s network. While this is a move was in the interests of the customers, especially those who cannot afford to pay for data packs to access the internet, it still violates the principles of net neutrality that dictates that all data should be treated equally. Google has had a phone locating service in the Android Device Manager website for a while now. The company has now implemented the functionality within its search engine itself.

You can now simply search for ‘Find my phone’ on Google and a small window appears on the search page showing the map and your phone’s current or last known location. From there you can choose to give your phone a ring to help you find it if it’s around. You can also choose a different device from the drop down menu at the top if you have more than one Android devices. Clicking on the map will take you to the Android Device Manager website. Yesterday, Opera marked its 10-year birthday by finally ushering Opera Mini 8 for Android out of beta. The app comes with a flashy new, material-inspired look and is still backwards compatible all the way back to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

This move definitely didn’t go unnoticed, but, as it turns out, the team is already hard at work on the next major version on the mobile browser. Apple has banned people from using selfie sticks or similar monopods within Moscone West or Yerba Buena Gardens during WWDC. The company has mentioned it as such on its WWDC General Instructions webpage.

To be fair, Apple has prohibited people from bringing any kind of serious photography equipment at the event and the selfie stick rule is to prevent people from blocking other people’s view with their obnoxious sticks. Read more »

It definitely looks like Nokia is in the midst of a major business restructure. After the acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent was made official today, new information hints at an uncertain future for the Finnish company’s maps division.

The fact of the matter is, that in recent years Nokia has centered its business around network equipment and the respective research and development. And while the new tech orientation leaves a lot of nostalgic mobile fans in sorrow, the venture has been mostly profitable for Nokia and it is doing fairly well in the network realm. Read more »
