AT&T is now offering the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 on its network and the tablet can be purchased online. The carrier will start selling the slate in its brick and mortar stores from July 25.

Snapchat introduces geofilters

Snapchat has added a new filter setting in the app called geofilters.

Now when you take a picture, just slide right and you will see a bunch of text filters that correspond to your location. You’ll only see filters for your location and it’s mostly just colorful text in fancy fonts and some images overlaid on your photos. If that’s something you’re into, then you have that option now. Free group video calls now possible on Skype for Windows tablets

Skype has announced a new update today, and this one enables you to do free group video calls if you use a Windows tablet or a “2 in 1 device” (which presumably refers to convertible laptops).

You have to be running Windows 8.1 on your device, though, as Windows 8 isn’t supported. If you do qualify, however, using this feature seems to be very straightforward. Read more »

MediaTek’s MT6595 octa-core chipset scores more than 47,000 in AnTuTu benchmark

Aside from unveiling the 64-bit true octa-core MT6795 chipset today, MediaTek has also showcased its 32-bit MT6595 part for the third time this year. Since we already know pretty much everything there is to know about this SoC, the Taiwanese company decided to hype it up by boasting that it’s gotten a result of 47,233 points in the AnTuTu benchmark.

As you may imagine, that’s nothing to be ashamed of. On the contrary, it’s more than many other chipsets from competing vendors have been able to achieve. Read more »

Microsoft is expected to undergo massive staff layoffs this week. According to a report by Bloomberg citing company insiders, Microsoft’s job cuts will be the biggest in five years.

Apples latest App Store statics reveal that 90% of all compatible devices are now powered by iOS 7. The share of the OS version is up by 8% since February and iOS 7 is by far the fastest adopted release to date.

Sony revamps its boot loader unlock tool

Sony has allowed users to unlock the boot loaders of their phones since 2011 (barring carrier restrictions) and now the company is re-launching the service with improved usability. The unlock process consists of just three steps and after the update the tool’s web page will be more helpful in guiding you through the process.

Google-owned Nest and Samsung join forces for the future of home automation

Wearables are gaining ground but there’s a revolution brewing in home appliances too – Google recently acquired Nest Labs while Samsung announced its own home automation platform. Instead of developing multiple incompatible technologies Nest, Samsung and others have united to create Thread.

Thread is built on 802.15.4 – a low-power wireless standard already used in home automation – but the Thread Group says previous standards built on it were developed before the Internet of Things. Read more »
