The Nokia Lumia 1020 is for the majority of the company’s fans the best smartphone to have come out of the Nokia-Microsoft partnership so far. It has presumably the best display Nokia currently makes, as well as presumably the best camera that’s even been fitted to a smartphone.

We have yet to test those on our dedicated review, but one thing we did already test is battery life.

A 2,000mAh battery doesn’t sound like much, but it powers a frugal dual-core processor and an AMOLED display. Combine this with the efficient Windows Phone 8 OS, and the Lumia 1020 promises to be a long-distance runner in our battery life test. Read more »

The Nokia Lumia 625 arrives as one of the final Lumia smartphones from Nokia, and looks to build on the name set forth by the budget-range Lumia 620.

This time around the device sports a larger display at 4.7-inches, but also features a 2000 mAh battery. With such a hefty battery having to only power a dual-core device, we expected great battery perfomance and the Lumia 625 delivered. Read more »

It appears that Apple is blocking non-certified Lightning cables from charging iPhones running iOS 7. The move is line with a warning from the Cupertino giant, issued during the launch of an iOS 7 pre-release version.

The Sony Xperia Z1 draws the crowds with an impressive camera and powerful chipset, but it’s also worth mentioning that the slender phone packs a large battery as well. It’s got a 3,000mAh fuel tank capacity, let’s see if it will go longer than the Xperia Z Ultra, which has virtually the same size battery (and chipset too), but proved to be a bit disappointing.

Sony has been pretty open to the developer community of its Xperia line-up of products, and that’s more than fantastic for the open source community. However, as it has been recently found out, unlocking the bootloader on the Xperia Z1 renders the camera nonfunctional.

As a result, while it is still possible for advanced users to unlock the bootloaders on their Xperia Z1 smartphones, they should have in mind this caveat. Read more »

Apple has released a new TV commercial that showcases the new iPhone 5c and the iOS 7 update together. Apple already mentioned during the 5c keynote how both the 5c and the iOS 7 have been designed to work well together and this ad shows just that.

When iOS 7 was first unveiled, it may have seemed just a tad bit too colorful for some tastes but it’s clear now that it was designed clearly with the new iPhone 5c in mind, which is definitely Apple’s biggest product this year and one that’s going to sell the most. Read more »

BlackBerry just jumped into the 5″ smartphone ring with the new Z30, up from the “small” Z10 with a 4.2″ screen. The BlackBerry Z30 also launches the new BlackBerry OS 10.2 with a number of new features.

The iPhone 5s alongside the iPhone 5c are both going to launch on September 20 in a select number of countries, and Apple is preparing for its marketing strategy to kick into gear. The plastic iPhone 5c saw its first commercial start rolling out today.

It’s been days since the pre-order for the iPhone 5c started and yet Apple hasn’t bragged about the millions of iPhones it has sold in the first 24 hours. The iPhone 5, for example, scored 2 million pre-orders in the short time period, the 4S managed a million and the iPhone 4 scored 600,000 pre-orders in the first 24 hours way back in 2010.

So, what’s going on with the iPhone 5c, is it doing equally well? China Unicom, the county’s second biggest carrier, has reported that 100,000 pre-orders for the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s have been made (and they only started taking them today). We’re still several days away from the September 20 iPhone 5s/5c global release date, but dedicated customers are already out camping in front of some stores such as the Tokyo Ginza Apple, where looming typhoon warnings cleared the streets. Jolla just announced that its Sailfish OS has reached two-fold compatibility with Android – it can run Android apps but also the OS itself can run on Android phones. This is major news as it solves the two big problems facing any upstart OS – it’s difficult to get hardware manufacturers to make devices for it and difficult to get devs to make apps for it.

By the looks of it, if a maker wishes to have a spin, it could put Sailfish on a phone or tablet that was designed with Android in mind. Read more »

A couple of days ago we wrote about the iPhone parody videos that Microsoft had uploaded on their Windows Phone YouTube channel. These amateurishly shot videos depicted two Apple engineers discussing ideas for the next iPhone with what looked like the late Steve Jobs and Jony Ive.

After almost universal negative feedback, Microsoft was quick to pull these videos from their channel but there was no official word from the company back then as to exactly why they removed them. However, the company has now revealed the reason behind the move. Read more »
