Apple released the first iOS 7 beta yesterday and we just couldn’t keep our hands off it. We just couldn’t wait until the fall to give the latest version of the Apple platform a try. We’ve installed the new iOS on an iPhone 5 and we’ve restored it from an iCloud backup. Everything has gone smooth so we are now able to share our first impressions with you.

While preparing the full review of the Nokia Lumia 928, we were quite curious what its Xenon flash is capable of. We had a Samsung Galaxy S4 around so we decided to do an impromptu shootout in low light conditions. We’ve prepared a set of samples from both devices for you to see, both with and without flash under the same conditions.

The entire marketing blitz surrounding the Nokia Lumia 928 has been built around its camera’s low light prowess. The samples we are about to show you now are not about that (or at least, not entirely).

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 is a big device, no question about it, it even makes the Galaxy S4 look compact. We already have a feel for the Mega 6.3 from its preview and we’re working on a full review. But before that’s done, we have to ask – does the battery live up to the “mega” monicker?

We’ve seen great battery efficiency from dual-core Snapdragon chipsets and the 3,200mAh battery has plenty of juice. So, it all comes down to the screen – and what a screen it is, it measures 6.3″ in diagonal and its surface area is only 23% smaller than a 7″ tablet (assuming a 16:10 screen for the tablet, like the Nexus 7). You can’t call yourself a gamer if you never played Contra. Released back in 1987 for the NES, Contra went on to become a cult classic and one of the best 2D side-scrolling action adventure games of all time that every gamer has a soft spot for.

Now, after all these years, developer PunchBox Studios has finally decided to remake this popular title for the mobile platform, starting with an iOS version. [Update: An Android version is now available on the Play Store.] Titled Contra: Evolution, the game features updated visuals and some new gameplay elements while keeping the original story and levels intact. Huawei Ascend Mate has just made it to out office. It’s the company’s largest smartphone up to date with a 6.1-inch IPS+ 720p display. The Mate is powered by Huawei’s home-brewed K3V2 chip, which has a quad-core 1.5GHz Cortex-A9 processor, 16-core graphics and 2GB of RAM.

The Ascend Mate runs on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean OS skinned with Huawei’s own Emotion UI. The entire skin reminds us a lot of the Meizu MX phones, since it lacks an app drawer and everything goes on your homescreens. Read more »

Quite frankly, when Google took the wraps off the $1,299 Chromebook Pixel, just about everyone got caught by surprise. After all, the newcomer costs over six times more than the cheapest Chromebook on offer, and thus goes completely against the notion that notebooks running Google’s OS embodies cheap computing.

Of course, the Pixel does have some chops to show for its price tag. Leading the way is a stunningly gorgeous body, machined from anodized aluminum. Once you crack the notebook open, a jaw-dropping 12.85” touchscreen with a resolution of 2560 x 1700 pixels greets you.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 has a split personality – it’s either powered by a Snapdragon 600 chipset (the I9505) or by Samsung’s own Exynos 5 Octa (the I9500). It took a while before it became clear which model goes to which country, but now it’s time to find out the answer to a more important question – does it matter?

Typically, Samsung uses Qualcomm chipsets for its US models (due to the chipsets built-in LTE support) and sold their Exynos smartphones elsewhere. Now, the situation is different and the Snapdragon-based model is more common, perhaps due to low manufacturing capacity for the new eight core Exynos chipset. Read more »

The Hisense Sero 7 Pro Android tablet, together with the entry-level Sero 7 LT slate, is the Chinese manufacturer’s first effort designed with the lucrative US market in mind. The Sony Xperia Tablet Z had to cross a river to get to our office… okay, it didn’t but it that wouldn’t have troubled it thanks to its IP57 certification. That’s not the only specs the Z tablet shares with the Z phone either, the slender OmniBalance design gives the tablet a unique look.
