Sony releases Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for its Xperia tablet S

Sony’s Xperia Tablet S was launched with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but the company has now started rolling its overdue Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update.

LinkedIn updates iOS and Android apps with brand new UI

LinkedIn, the social network for suits, has updated its mobile apps on iOS and Android. Both apps now feature a brand new UI with a simpler and more attractive layout.

The new app features cards for individual posts, similar to the Facebook and Google+ apps. Clicking on the button on the top left opens a drawer on the left with your messages and notifications. There is a permanent search bar at the top and a button to leave a new post. Read more »

Google Play gets updated tablet app guidelines, support for tablet-optimized screenshots

Google Play has updated its guidelines for tablet applications and the developers can now show off their tablet apps in a more beautiful and specialized tablet layouts.

The latest update allows the tablet app developers to upload screenshots of their applications running on 7-inch and 10-inch tablets to the Google Play developer console and those screenshots are shown to users with the devices of the respective size. Read more »

Microsoft to receive royalties from Foxconn under a new patent licensing agreement with Hon Hai

Microsoft and Hon Hai, the parent company of Foxconn have signed a patent licensing agreement, which provides wider access to the patent portfolio of Microsoft for the devices running with Android and Chrome OS. The devices quoted in the patent agreement include smartphones, tablets and televisions.

The terms of the agreement are undisclosed, but Microsoft is said to receive royalties from Hon Hai under the new patent licensing agreement. Read more »

WhatsApp has more active users than Twitter, CEO says

Over at the AllThingsD Dive Into Mobile conference WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum took to the stage to discuss the app’s position, users and drop a bomb that his app is “bigger than Twitter” when looking at the active monthly users.

Although the two platforms differ in the way the work – Twitter being more of a social network where your tweets are public and WhatsApp being a peer-to-peer messaging service – Jan Koum said WhatsApp has more than 200 million active users a month, thus besting Twitter. Read more »

Amazon expands its Appstore for Android, will soon be available in 200 countries

Amazon has revealed that it will soon be expanding its global app distribution and the Appstore for Android will soon be available in nearly 200 new markets, which include South Africa, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, India and Australia.

The developers are allowed to submit their applications for the distribution in the newer markets. The expansion of the Appstore, which was earlier available in only few selected countries, will now allow Amazon to compete against the likes of Google and Apple. Read more »
