Nokia released its Symbian Anna update last week for the N8, E7, C7 and C6-01 handsets and has released an introductory video of the Anna UI to familiarize users with it and, naturally, brag a little about it. Not only that but they’ve put up a dedicated page on how to upgrade to Symbian Anna using the Ovi Suite, the Nokia Software updater for Mac and finally, the in-built updater app on the supported Symbian phones.

The first video focuses the viewer’s attention to four main concepts of Anna – the new design, the battle-proven Nokia maps navigation, the updated, faster web browser and finally, the better PIM (multiple emails support, file manager, business-grade security and more). Is it just me or Samsung seems to be having way more fun with their ads nowadays than they did before? And more than their competitors, that’s for sure. The latest ad for the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a very upbeat one about a wacky boss that tries to toughen his employees by making them live on a farm.

The scenario has all the ingredients you’d expect on a farm – barns, horses, cattle, flocks of goats, the great outdoors, and some Galaxy tablets with incredible internet connections for good measure. Yep, just what I’d want to bring on a farm. Read more »

The iPhone 5 (4s) will most probably feature a dual-mode CDMA and GSM version in order to cater to both AT&T and Verizon networks and hence be a truly global device. This was discovered by TechCrunch via an iOS developer’s insider information.

According to this person, an app has been registered from a single dual-mode iPhone device in testing, supposedly the next iPhone, running on iOS 5 and using two separate mobile network codes and mobile country codes. The MNC/MCC codes were used for AT&T and Verizon at the same time. Read more »

Skype will buy the GroupMe messaging service in order to expand its group messaging capabilities and gain points on the mobile battleground. People close to the deal say that the chat giant will cash out the whopping $85 million although Skype itself hasn’t yet disclosed this information officially.

GroupMe is a very young company, started in 2010 and has around twenty employees. During the course of its first year it earned around $11 million in funding from the likes of Betaworks, First Round Capital, Khosla Ventures, General Catalyst and more.

Skype CEO Tony Bates has said that he’s been in talks with GroupMe for a few months, around the time Skype was in negotiations with Microsoft, which is currently acquiring Skype for $8.5 billion. He has also said that Skype will keep GroupMe as a standalone brand, located in New York City, and look for points of integration with Skype’s service portfolio. The ultimate goal for Skype is to get to 1 billion active users and the company believes this would be done with the mobile ecosystem, where GroupMe would be a great asset to Skype.

Skype faces many rivals on the mobile ground, including BlackBerry’s Messaging, soon-to-be officially launched Apple iMessage service and third-party cross-platform apps like WhatsApp and Viber, and let’s not leave out Facebook’s Messenger out of the equation.

We’re yet to see the fruits of Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype and now those GroupMe will bring to both companies.

The iOS 5 beta 6 was released via an OTA update a couple of days ago and it already got its jailbreak via the Sn0wbreeze v2.8 beta 6 tool.

The iOS 5 beta 6 itself brings some bug fixes but nothing too major. You can get it OTA directly from your iPhone issues-free. The jailbreak brings developers full access to the OS, but the jailbreak is a tethered one again so your device will need to be jailbroken anew every time your restart or power-off your phone.

The only device that’s skimping on the spoils is the iPad 2 – no jailbreak there.

HTC’s obviously preparing something bit for September 1st as the company is reportedly organizing four simultaneous meet-up events across Western Europe. HTC is inviting everybody who is interested and says it will reveal “what’s next” and that it will have “a few phone treats”. On the last public event of this type, the company showed the HTC Sensation to the world for the first time.

The HTC EVO 3D is HTC’s answer to LG’s 3D foray on the world tech scene. It features the solid foundation of the ultra-popular Sensation including a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, Adreno 220 GPU and the latest Android distribution – 2.3 Gingerbread. However the single 8 megapixel snapper has been replaced with a couple of 5 megapixel cameras, allowing for 3D photo and video capture, while the screen has been replaced by one that does glass-free 3D.

We came across a really good fake video of the Apple Germany website, detailing the iPhone 5. Someone really gave their all when creating this one. It details everything from the new design, the new dual-core A5 chip, better 8 MP camera with FullHD video recording and the bigger display.

The video is obviously fake – you can bet your good money on that fact and I’ve prepared the proof that’s needed. Still it’s pretty well made and makes for a good rumor roundup so checking it out is worth it. Read more »

Rumor suggests that the annual Fall event, held by Apple, will take place on 7 September this year. This is the event usually dedicated to the refresh of the iPod series, but should this year also see the announcement of the next iPhone and possibly a new iPad.

The scoop comes from Japanese website KODAWARISAN and they say that the information is legit, coming from some kind of an inside source. In previous years Apple held their Fall events on 09.09.08, 09.09.09 and 01.09.10. If a new iPhone does make it to the scene it could become available as soon as later next month or in early October. Sony and LG have finally settled their patent dispute that concerned infringed patents on smartphones, TVs and Blu-ray technology.

The dispute began after a technology sharing agreement expired three years ago and the two companies have exchanged a couple of blows in the US and European courts since then. A complaint was filed by Sony concerning LG smartphones in the US and LG accused Sony of infringing its Blu-ray video technology in the PlayStation 3. LG even got a court injunction in the Netherlands, where PlayStation 3 consoles were seized by customs. Read more »

Facebook released today a brand new (separate) app, called Facebook Messenger for the iPhone and Android devices. It combines all of your messages into a single app and can be used to text your Facebook buddies via your profile or text message, via your carrier.

Also 9to5Mac have uncovered that the app (both for the iPhone and Android) has a top-secret video component to it, which would mean that the Palo Alto-based company is on route to rub shoulders with Skype (among others) by bringing cross-platform video calls. Read more »

The iOS 5 beta 5 was released last week and just got its jailbreak via Redsn0w 0.9.8b5. The jailbreak is again only a tethered one (so in case of a reboot you’ll have to plug your iDevice into a computer and load the jailbreak anew) and still doesn’t support iPad 2.

If you’re running an iPhone or iPod Touch with the beta iOS 5 you can install this jailbreak but keep in mind that it’s intended for devs to test so even though it has more features it doesn’t work as well as the current iOS version. Some jailbroken apps and tweeks aren’t supported for one and performance is hardly the smoothest as of yet. Read more »

The names of three upcoming Android smartphones headed to Sprint just got confirmed. Subscribers to the fourth largest US carrier will be getting access to the Samsung Epic 4G Touch, HTC EVO Design 4G and Motorola Admiral.

There’s not much information about the specs of those devices, but it’s pretty safe to say that the Epic 4G Touch will be a Samsung Galaxy S II variant, featuring a slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard. Read more »

The Google+ social network is growing steadily still and it has just welcomed iPad and iPod Touch users. Up until now the iOS app was only available to the iPhone, but the update that was just released fixed that. The bad news here is that iPad users are getting nothing more than an upscaled iPhone version that plainly isn’t optimized for the bigger screen.

The update to the app also brings new Huddle settings, aggregated circle add notifications and last, but not least performance and stability improvements. Hangouts are still missing in the latest version, though. Read more »
