Google Maps on Android getting live public transit timetables

by 9 comments

Google Maps is in league with some transit agencies in the US and Spain and Italy to give its users live updates and time tables right there on your PC or mobile device. They will tell you how long until your bus (train, etc.) will arrive at your stop.

This is actually pretty cool and is already available with no updates whatsoever for desktop browsers and Android smartphones. The currently covered cities are Turin (Italy), Madrid, Boston, San Francisco, San Diego, Portland and Google says that’s just the beginning. Read more »

Here’s what Apple failed to deliver to this year’s WWDC announcement [EDITORIAL]

by 38 comments

Yesterday was the kickoff of Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference for 2011. As you can imagine, we were all anticipating the changes this year’s keynote will bring for weeks before it actually took place. We even had a small poll going on whether or not there will be a new iPhone announcement even though rumors suggested there won’t be any.

Probably spoiled by Apple’s way of bringing new and innovative ideas to the table each year, I was hoping for something revolutionary, something that would rock my iOS-loving, iPhone-hugging world. Sadly all I saw were minor changes, most of which were already available one way or another. Read more »

Why is Apple giving Facebook the cold shoulder in iOS 5?

by 36 comments

Does Apple have a genuine beef with social networking giant Facebook or is it just irreconcilable differences? The lack of a proper Facebook integration in iOS is prompting a lot of questions – especially now that we see Twitter embedded in and out. Apple execs also seem to go out of their way to keep Facebook out of the conversation.

Rumor has it, Apple and Facebook supposedly had some talks about involving Facebook into Apple’s own music social network attempt – Ping. Sadly we’ve seen no progress so far. Steve Jobs had a comment for those fruitless talks, saying that Facebook had “onerous terms”, to which Apple couldn’t agree on. Read more »

Well in typical Cupertino fashion the new promo video is out for the premiere features in the latest iOS version – 5. The seats at the WWDC keynote hall are still warm and we’re hurrying to bring you the latest news.

The video follows suite in typical Apple style with the white background and nice tune to go behind the voices of featured Greg Joswiak (VP of iPod, iPhone and iOS Product Marketing) and Scott Forstall (Senior VP of iOS Software). They’re the ones talking us through the various key features of the new iOS release. Read more »

New Angry Birds episode coming soon to AppStores all around [VIDEO]

by 804 comments

Angry Birds fans rejoice as the original title will get a whole new and exciting episode very soon. Details are scarce and there’s no info on how many levels Rovio will release, but the game’s track record would suggest at least 30.

The new episode sees the pesky pigs go underground with the stolen birds’ eggs, where our angry heroes will take flight to destroy buildings and bring down stalactites on the green devils heads. It all sounds cool and definitely fresh, just like Rovio has always done it with its popular title. Read more »

Sony Ericsson W8 hits the office, we do an unboxing, get your earplugs ready

by 29 comments

What if I was to say that we have in our mitts a device that is to end forever the reign of affordable mp3 players? Well, I could be wrong but the W8 seems to pack a lot of bang for a device of its miniscule stature and it doesn’t seem afraid to use it.

Sony Ericsson decided to relight an old flame in the face of the Xperia X8 by giving it a Walkman branding and sending it off into the unknown pockets of young, enthusiastic teens with affiliations for loud music. It has a 3” capacitive display of HVGA (320 x 480) resolution, 3.2 MP camera and the pocket-friendliness of its small body. And this just might be the only Walkman phone that has no orange coating whatsoever on its body. Read more »

Nokia demoes C7′s NFC prowess with an exclusive Angry Birds Magic game

by 312 comments

Nokia is showcasing the NFC capabilities of its C7 Symbian device using an NFC version of the widely popular Angry Birds game, dubbed Magic. This all goes down at the MeeGo conference in San Francisco. The purpose of the game is to find someone with a C7 smartphone and using the NFC chip inside to unlock levels, after you’re done with the previous ones.

You get 5 levels of Angry Birds after which you will need to unlock the next five by pairing two C7 units together. It’s a clever idea, I have to admit. Read more »

HTC Play could be a new online store for games by HTC

by 303 comments

HTC filed a request at the US Patent and Trademark Office to protect the term HTC Play as a trademark. Reportedly this is the name of a future HTC-exclusive app market for games (I’m guessing Android ones), to which every HTC phone will have access.

Now I’m not sure if another app store is what we most need at the moment, as there are, what, 10 of them already? You have the Amazon store you have the Opera store, a couple of obscure ones like SlideMe and, of course, the Android Market . I just don’t see the point. Android started off as a unified OS with its own ecosystem, spanning through manufacturer to manufacturer. Now there are Xperia PLAY-exclusive games, exclusive application stores and this all makes the choice of which droid to grab all the harder for the end user. Read more »

TomTom in the making of its own Street View service, be afraid Google, be very afraid

by 11 comments

TomTom is a respected GPS tycoon, which makes receivers and also provides the map data and know-how. Now it looks like it’s thinking of branching out into the street viewing business, which is Google and Microsoft exclusive territory so far. We guess those two wouldn’t exactly appreciate that.

This comes after a very intriguing picture was uploaded to Tumblr.com, showing a TomTom van with a 360-degree cam mounted on top of it. What else could be used for except making an all-round street view service? Read more »

Opera Mini 6 for iOS review: Out of the Middle Ages, into the Renaissance [VIDEO]

by 11 comments

Opera Mini is one of the most popular browsers across many platforms (iOS, Android, Symbian, BlackBerry OS, etc). It utilizes server-side compression to bring you a less data-hungry version of the webpage you’re enjoying, saving you your precious data traffic in the background.

And now the latest Opera Mini browser update is out for iOS (it’s already been appreciated on Android) and we’re hot in pursuit of its pros and cons. The new version, 6.0 to be exact, is flat out, embarrassingly better than the old one and for the first time in its iOS history truly usable as a replacement for the Safari browser. Read more »

A number of Sony websites hit again by hackers, more than 10,000 affected

by 20 comments

Sony was victimized by hackers again as a Sony Ericsson website in Canada was breached and the personal data of 2000 people was stolen. Also details on another 8500 users were leaked on a Sony Music Entertainment website in Greece.

Among the sensitive information lost were e-mails, passwords and phone numbers. Credit card information wasn’t stolen this time so that’s a high five on that account, at least. Read more »
