Uber has launched its services in Birmingham, making it the fourth British city after London, Manchester and Leeds where the ride-sharing service is now available.

As a gesture of goodwill, the company is also offering up to £15 ($23) off on first ride in the city.
Vanessa Wittman has officially joined the ranks of Dropbox as the new Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Prior to the new occupation she was a high ranking executive, SVP and CFO at Motorola Mobility, after it was acquired by Google in 2011 and during the first year of Lenovo’s ownership as well. Wittman has also worked as the CFO of Marsh & McLennan so quite an impressive CV there.

Pinterest has partnered with Apple to launch App Pins, a feature that’ll let you stick iOS apps to Pinterest boards, allowing other users to download and install them on their iPhone or iPad without ever leaving the visual bookmarking service.
“Let’s say you’re Pinning workout inspiration to your Marathon Training board. If you see a fitness app that helps you reach your goals, you can download it right from Pinterest,” the company said in a blog post.
Several users of the Fitbit Surge, which was announced back in October last year, have reported that the wearable health-tracking device is causing irritation, rashes, as well as broken skin on their wrists.
Aware of the issue, Fitbit has issued the following statement: “The reactions we are seeing with new products are not uncommon with jewelry or wearable devices that stay in contact with the skin for extended periods.” The company also said that the problems stem from wearing the band too tight; sweat, water, or soap being held against the skin under the device; or from pressure or friction against the skin, suggesting users to keep the device clean and dry, and give their wrist a rest.
NVIDIA has released an update to the Shield Portable device that improves the performance of emulators on the device. The update is small, at just over 3MB, and is optional.
This is good news as the Shield Portable is an ideal device for running emulators. For those not aware, emulators allow you to run games from other platforms, such as classic Nintendo games, which otherwise won’t run natively on Android. Since Shield Portable has built-in controls, it is great for playing classic games on the move and it is good to see NVIDIA acknowledge the typical use case of the device and work on improving that aspect.
Samsung Display has plans to spend $3.6 billion on a new OLED display production line. A Samsung spokesman told Reuters about about the Korean giant’s future plans.
Most of the new production capacity will focus on small and medium-sized OLED panels for consumer devices.

Today Nokia has announced a new map data update for its Here apps for Windows Phone and Android. This isn’t an app update per se, but rather an update to the underlying information that the apps use. So if you’ve downloaded maps in Here for offline use, you’ll need to update those to get all the new perks. Otherwise, if you’re only using Here in online mode, you’ll see the changes automatically.
You should get an update notification at some point, regardless of which mobile platform you use. Of course you can also manually trigger the download by going to Here’s settings (on Android) or, on Windows Phone, to Settings > Applications > Maps.
If you were wondering how well the Android Wear platform was doing in terms of sales, well, wonder no more. Well known analyst house Canalys has the answer. In 2014, 720,000 smartwatches running Google’s wearable platform were sold.
That’s not much. A grand total of 4.6 million “smart wearable bands” were shipped last year, according to the same source.

The Apple Watch, which is launching in April this year, will remind you to get out of your desk chair and and move around if you haven’t done so for too long, according to CEO Tim Cook.
Speaking at the Goldman Sachs technology conference yesterday, Cook said that the smartwatch will “tap” you on the wrist 10 minutes before each hour, prompting you to get up and take a walk. He also shared that because so many people at the Cupertino-based company are wearing the watch, it’s common to see a lot of people getting up at the same time during meetings.
