The PirateBay planning on taking its servers to the sky

by 38 comments

Some of you may have noticed that the infamous torrent hosting website – The PirateBay – went down yesterday for a few hours, creating quite a bit of panic among those who wear an eye-patch and a wooden leg. Thankfully for them, though, the site wasn’t taken down by the law as they feared and was just down for a bit of maintenance.

When it came back online, however, it had some interesting bit of information to share. It seems now the people at TPB are looking at hosting their servers up in the air, to make them that much more difficult to take down. Read more »

Demystifying the new iPad name

by 96 comments

The new iPad launch event was more or less what everyone expected. The air was so thick with rumors before the launch that almost nothing that was announced managed to surprise anyone. Except that one thing that no one saw coming, and that was a new name. Almost everyone and his dog was betting on the new iPad being called the iPad 3 and as such a lot of people were actually disappointed that it wasn’t called that (never mind the fact that it makes absolutely no different to the product at all).

Even here at GSMArena were were quite baffled initially as to why Apple would choose to name their third generation product same as the first one and, at least as far as the name is concerned, place it behind the second generation model. But after a little bit of pondering, a few explanations started to come to my mind. Read more »

CyanogenMod disables default root access with CyanogenMod 9

by 37 comments

Up until now, CyanogenMod ROMs were released with root access available by default. But this had become a cause for concern over time; making root access available meant giving apps complete access to your device and thus putting yourself at a security risk.

So in order to take care of this situation, the CyanogenMod team has decided to disable root access over USB from CyanogenMod 9 onwards. Read more »

Qualcomm provides Adreno 2xx GPU binaries for Android 4.0

by 20 comments

One of the problems with porting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich over to old Snapdragon S1 based devices, such as the Nexus One and the HTC HD2, is the lack of GPU binaries. Because of this, initial releases of ICS ROMs for these devices did not support GPU-accelerated UI.

Later, however, developers figured out a way to enable GPU acceleration on these devices but the performance was still less than ideal. Now to make the lives of these developers and all those people out there who run custom ICS ROMs on these older Snapdragon phones easier, Qualcomm has decided to lend a helping hand in the form of GPU binaries for the Adreno 2xx series of GPU. The highly popular ‘Cut the Rope’ game has been available on Android for a while now. But it’s next version, ‘Cut the Rope: Experiments’ has been an iOS exclusive since launch. Samsung Galaxy Note stop-motion ad might be cooler than the phoneblet itself

by 27 comments

Hey yo dawg, Samsung heard you like stop motion, so it put stop motion in your stop motion! Jokes aside, the latest Samsung Galaxy Note ad is one of the most creative bits of advertising we have seen recently and we believe you may do a whole lot worse with a minute of your life than spending it to watch it.

Even though it didn’t quite have the budget that some of the other Samsung ads had, this video of just over a minute obviously took a substantial effort to create. Read more »
