Apple beware: there are nearly 700,000 apps in the Google Play Store now

As if the recently refreshed Nexus line-up and the Android 4.2 announcement didn’t give Apple enough things to worry about, Google has now told Bloomberg that it’s about to overtake its rival in the apps count race.

In fact, there are a just under 700,000 different applications in the Google Play Store, which is pretty close to what Apple touts in its App Store. Read more »

The Lumia 820 is Nokia’s greatest tree-hugger to date, and the Finns are very proud of it

Nokia is very proud of its environmentally friendly approach to phone making and the new Nokia Lumia 820 is among its best efforts in this regard. The phone is made from recycled materials and bio-plastics (made from inedible plants) and doesn’t use a number of materials that cause environmental issues.

The phone itself can be fully recycled, just like its packaging, which is made from 60% recycled materials to begin with. Check out a video that explains Nokia’s recycling efforts after the break. Read more »

Nokia starts ‘Time to Switch’ ad campaign, has people telling you why they love their Lumia

Nokia’s future is riding on the success of its Windows Phone handsets and the Finnish company is sparing no effort to make them a success. Nokia has just started a new ad campaign called “Time to #Switch”, which wants to entice you into buying a Lumia phone (the Lumia 820 is already on sale in the UK and it and the Lumia 920 will soon hit US carriers too).

ASUS sells nearly a million Nexus 7 units a month, expects the rate to increase

The Nexus 7 is doing pretty well sales-wise, reaching a rate of nearly a million units per month. According to the ASUS CFO David Chang, the slate is bound to do even better in the coming months.

While this definitely counts as a success for both Google and ASUS, the Nexus 7′s sales figures still remain in the shadow of the tablet king in the face of the iPad, which shipped in 14 million units in Q3 of this year. Read more »

Google Search app update for iOS brings improved voice search

Google has released a new version of the Search app for iOS and it brings with it a greatly improved voice search experience that you may have experienced on Android devices running Jelly Bean.

The new Google Search app for iOS features a prominently placed voice search button below the search bar and one tap on it lets you speak your query to the device. Your words appear on the screen as soon as you speak them and then the app searches for the answer. For questions with short answers you also get a voice response, just like on Android. Read more »

WP8 wars: HTC calls Lumia 920 a fatty, uses pennies to make a point

Oh No You Didn’t! HTC went on Facebook to flaunt its slender Windows Phone 8X device and take a jab at “that other Windows Phone”Nokia Lumia 920 for being “more than 20 pennies” heavier than the WP 8X.

A bit of research and we find that the American penny (or otherwise one cent) weighs exactly 2.5 grams. So we calculated 20 pennies to be precisely 50 grams, meaning HTC is referring to the 55 g heavier than the WP 8X Lumia 920. Ouch! Read more »

Microsoft Surface torn down, found relatively hard to repair

The Surface is Microsoft’s first tablet and the software giant is quite proud of the design, but as iFixit found out, the sleek external shell is hard to get open if you need to do some repairs. A total of 17 screws hold the back in place and 7 of those are under a hard to remove plastic bezel.

Anyway, the inside of the Surface holds several interesting chips, including an NVIDIA Tegra 3. There’s also 2GB of DDR3 RAM from Micron, 32GB flash storage from Samsung and a Wolfson audio chip. Read more »

Rovio releases Angry Birds Star Wars gameplay trailer

Just when you though you couldn’t take any more of Angry Birds in any form here comes another new game. As we have mentioned it before, Angry Birds Star Wars is the fifth game in the Angry Birds series by Rovio and is based on, no prices for guessing, Star Wars.

Android 4.2 Jelly Bean’s Photo Sphere feature lets you snap photos like the ones in Google Street View

The new Android 4.2 Jelly Bean was just announced and one of the most interesting new features is called Photo Sphere. It lets you shoot spherical panoramas, similar to what you see in Google Street View.

Capturing a Photo Sphere is easy, you just snap photos left, right, up, down, wherever, and the camera app will automatically stitch them. If it still sounds confusing, check out this video demo by Hugo Barra himself (Android’s Director of Product Management). Read more »
