New security feature in Android 4.2 checks sideloaded apps for malware

Google has introduced a new feature on Android 4.2 that aims to reduce the instances of malware running on Android device.

In their previous attempt, the company had added a feature on the Play Store called Bouncer, which checked apps on the Play Store for malicious content. This time, the service will be running on the device itself and will be checking sideloaded apps instead. Read more »

The latest fad in the world of technology coverage are drop tests that drop new devices from various angles to see how well they hold up (or don’t). While the jury is still out on the accuracy of these tests, they do help paint a picture of how well your future (or present) device will fare after hurtling towards the Earth at 9.81 m/s2. The HTC Desire X is a midrange offering from the Taiwanese, which brings some dual-core, Sense’d ICS bang for a reasonable buck.

Amazon released Cloud Drive Photos app for Android with 5GB of free storage

Amazon has just launched the Cloud Drive Photos app in the Google Play Store. It’s free and can be installed on any device running Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread or higher.

With this app you can easily upload photos from your Android devices and computers to the Amazon cloud. You can also easily share those photos to various social services, via email, etc. Read more »

Mission Highly Possible: Notification center in Windows Phone 8

Android was first to introduce pull-down notifications, to be later adopted by iOS too, and now Windows Phone is about to follow suit.

iPad mini launches today, Apple eyeing 1.5 million units sold over the weekend

Despite being a couple of weeks behind schedule, the iPad mini sales open today, but only in the US and only in black.

Never mind the delay, Apple is expected to sell around 1.5 million units of its 7.85″ slate. Gene Munster at Piper Jaffray has made the projection and he believes Apple will hit that number before the weekend’s over. Read more »

UK Court slams Apple for the “Samsung/Apple UK judgement” text, orders changes to be made in 48 hours

Following the UK Court of Appeal ruling, Apple had to put a clear statement on its website saying that Samsung didn’t infringe on the iPad patents. And Apple did, but in a way that wasn’t what the judges really had in mind.

According to the official ruling, the guys from Cupertino had to clearly state on their UK website that “Samsung didn’t copy” the company’s designs. Instead, Apple posted a few paragraphs explaining in long how despite the UK’s ruling, courts in the US and Germany acknowledged that Samsung did infringe the company’s highly popular tablet. US database for stolen phones is now live, to join the international blacklist soon

The Wireless Association (CTIA) has announced the US database for stolen phones is now up and running. In case a phone gets in there it won’t be allowed to connect to any of the US networks.

The participating carriers in the database are AT&T, Cellcom, Nex-Tech Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile USA, and Verizon Wireless. They already deployed their IMEI databases of stolen phones and the merge should be completed within a year. Read more »

Samsung releases Smart Dock for the Galaxy Note II

Samsung has announced a new accessory for the Galaxy Note II called the Smart Dock. This allows you to plug your phone into the dock and then use it as a makeshift desktop PC or media center.

The Smart Dock uses the microUSB port to interface with your Galaxy Note II. On the back is an HDMI port that will output 1080p video stream to a monitor or a TV. There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack for outputting stereo sound. The microUSB port on the back lets you connect the dock to a charger or a computer. Read more »

Archos 80 Cobalt is an 8-inch, Android 4.0 tablet

Archos has announced their upcoming Android tablet on their Facebook page. Called the Archos 80 Cobalt, the tablet has an 8-inch, 1024 x 768 resolution display and runs on Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Inside, the Archos 80 Cobalt runs on an unspecified SoC with a dual-core 1.6GHz CPU and a quad-core GPU with 1GB of RAM. There is 8GB of internal storage space with microSD card slot. There is a 2 megapixel camera on the back and a VGA camera on the front. Read more »
