Fitbit has revealed in a post on their forum that the company is working on an app for the Windows Phone 8.1 platform. The app was so far only available on iOS and Android, which meant those on Windows Phone devices couldn’t use the accessory.

Accessory makers have general avoided the Windows Phone platform like the plague, mostly due to the lack of popularity of the platform, which doesn’t make the cost of developing and maintaining the app worthwhile. There have also been technical limitations on the previous versions of Windows Phone that prevented developers from making such apps, which have seemingly been taken care of in the latest 8.1 update, so one could expect more apps in future. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and Galaxy Tab S 10.5 were announced at the Premiere event a couple of days ago. They’ve been up for pre-order in the US since yesterday, and now it’s the UK’s turn.

Starting today, you can pre-order the tablets at PC World, and they’re both expected to start shipping on July 4. They will become available in-store the following day, if what a tipster told Android Central is accurate. Read more »

Google Maps now joins the Android apps list with over 1 billion downloads, following Gmail which founded the club a month ago.

Maps has always been one of the most successful Android apps and the 1 billion downloads mark represents unique accounts that have downloaded the app (multiple downloads from one account are counted as 1). The LG G3 is the first mainstream smartphone to out a smartphone with a QHD display, and as such is the first major manufacturer to have to deal with the extra battery load required to power such a robust screen.

LG has thrown in a 3000mAh battery to power the device, and while that sounds pretty great it’s unclear if it will be enough to make the G3 a battery life king. Read more »

The White House launched an initiative, ConnectED, which aims to give 99% of US students high-speed internet access within the next five years.

Sprint has decided to partake in ConnectED by pledging broadband internet service to the homes of 50,000 students in the US. Read more »

Firefox OS is being ushered in as a low-cost, non-resource hungry smartphone OS, but the architecture of the operating system does have some benefits that could extend to other platforms.

Firefox OS’ apps are basically web applications, that are mostly built-on HTML5 and Jaca Script, so they can be used both on the phone and in a phone’s browser. Because of this, the apps run pretty much natively on Android phones. Hit the jump to learn more. Read more »

A few hours ago Samsung unveiled its flagship tablet series – the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and Galaxy Tab S 10.5. They feature high resolution Super AMOLED displays, top-notch chipsets, fingerprint sensors, Galaxy S5-inspired design and super thin and light shells.

Back in 2009 Intel agreed to pay AMD $1.25 billion in an antitrust settlement, but the battle wasn’t over – the European commission had a separate case against the leading chip maker. Intel was appealing that decision but five years later the commission has passed its final verdict.

DxOMark has finished the long process of evaluating the Samsung Galaxy S5 camera and has given it the highest score of any smartphone to date, 79/100, though it has to share this spot with the Sony Xperia Z2. That said, the Galaxy S5 records the best video yet beating the Xperia by a comfortable margin.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 got an 80/100 score for still photography. It was commended for very good Exposure, White balance and Color rendering in good light. Read more »

Samsung’s Maestro Academy has come up with a new Smart Bike concept. This bicycle connects to your phone and attempts to create a safer riding experience for bikers.

The Smart Bike comes with features such as built-in camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. You connect your smartphone wirelessly to the bike and it shows you what is going on bend you on the screen using the camera mounted on the back. Read more »

Remember Friendster? It was was one of the first social media networks, long before MySpace and Facebook. Well the founder of Friendster, Jonathan Abrams, has raised $1.7m for Nuzzle, an iPhone app that was released about a month ago.
