Galaxy S gets an Android 4.1 port, makes Samsung devs stare in disbelief

Remember when Samsung said that the I9000 Galaxy S simply doesn’t have enough power to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich? What if we told you that not only is that untrue, but the smartphone can also handle Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The proof was, as usual, delivered by the omnipotent indie devs over at XDA-developers and came in the form of a Jelly Bean-based ROM, which performs flawlessly but for a couple of minor bugs. Read more »

Instagram adds support for Nexus 7, Flickr sharing.

Nexus 7 users trying to install Instagram on their shiny new tablets would until now have gotten an unsupported device message. Lucky for them, they don’t have to wait for long as Instagram has already issued an update that adds support for Google’s newest tablet.

Although one might wonder why would anyone need Instagram on a tablet that doesn’t even have a rear camera, it would at least allow you to check photos uploaded by others on that 720p IPS display. And you can always take a picture with the front camera if you ever wanted to. Read more »

XBMC for Android revealed, download the leaked APK here

XBMC is a popular media center application for the desktop known for its 10-foot UI and the ability to customize using plugins and skins. Now the developers have announced on their blog that they are working on a full-fledged version of the application for Android.

CyanogenMod 9 makes its way to all US Samsung Galaxy S III versions but the Verizon Wireless one

We have some great news for all the Samsung Galaxy S III users in the United States, who find the TouchWiz interface a tad too colorful. CyanogenMod 9 nightly builds are now available for all US versions of Samsung’s flagship smartphone, but the Verizon Wireless flavored one.

Nokia Transport drops the Beta moniker, available for free on your Lumia

Facebook for Android update brings front camera support, new messaging features

Facebook has issued a new update to the Facebook app for Android, which adds some minor new features. First of all, you can now take self portraits using the front facing camera from within the app itself. You will notice a tiny button will appear in the bottom left/top left of the screen within the camera view.

Next, there are some new messaging features, which let you switch between conversations, include friends of friends, share bigger photos and see who is available online. Read more »

Nokia Series 40 devices got an official Twitter app

Amazing Alex now available in the iOS App Store, Google Play

Just as planned, today Rovio released their new game on the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store. Called Amazing Alex, the new physics puzzle game’s gameplay is a notable departure from Angry Birds.

This time around you are prompted to design elaborate chain reactions to get certain tasks accomplished. There are 100 challenging levels across four locations, with more promised to come in the future. Read more »

Dropbox doubles the available storage for paid plans, introduces a new 500GB tier

Dropbox has just brough some good news to its Pro customers, doubling the available storage for the Pro 50 and Pro 100 plans. This means that if you subscribe to one of these you will get your 100GB and 200GB of storage, respectively, for the same price as before. Even if you are already a paying Dropbox customer you still get your quota doubled.

And if that still doesn’t seem enough to you, Dropbox announced the launch of a whole new plan offering 500GB of storage. It will set you back $49.99 if you choose the pay monthly option or $499.99 for a whole year if you pay in advance. Read more »

Krait-packing HTC One X overclocked to 1.8 GHz, gets ready to ace benchmarks

By using a custom Kernel module, some XDA developers members have managed to overclock the Krait CPU cores of the HTC One X (the one available on the AT&T and Rogers networks) to 1.8 GHz.

This makes the MSM8960 SoC about 20% faster and the Kernel is applicable to any rooted One X, based on Krait, without the need to unlock the bootloader. Read more »

Official Android 4.0.4 ROM leaks for the Samsung Galaxy S II

If you are a Galaxy S II user, chances are that you have been running Android 4.0 for a while now. However, the current version of ICS on the Galaxy S II is Android 4.0.3, and not the latest 4.0.4 found on phones like the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus S.

The guys over at SamMobile.com have come across an official Android 4.0.4 ROM for the Galaxy S II. No proper changelog is available at the moment but if you have used it on the Galaxy Nexus you’d know that 4.0.4 only brings minor improvements. Read more »

Indoors Google Maps is now available in the United Kingdom and Switzerland for Android

Previously available only for the US, Canada and Japan, the Google Maps support for indoor plans for museums, train stations, and other large buildings now comes to the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

Google says more than 40 venues have declared their interest and worked with the search engine giant to make a floor plan for the app. Read more »
