The Samsung Galaxy S got decent support from its manufacturer. The smartphone launched with Android 2.1 Eclair, but got a Froyo update shortly after and eventually got a pass to the land of Gingerbread.

Sadly, with the latest release of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Sammy is pulling the plug on the Galaxy S and the company won’t be releasing an update for the year-and-a-half old smartphone. But fret not, the independent Android devs community came to the rescue and released a stable, fully functioning, fast running Ice Cream Sandwich ROM for the Galaxy S in surprisingly little time. Touchscreen is cool, but touchless is even cooler. And if a small company XTR3D has its way, we might be getting more of the touchless experience from our TVs and smartphones really soon. XTR3D has developed a Kinect-like system that recognizes your gestures and uses them to control various devices.

There’s no need for remote controls or touching the actual device, you just wave your hand and, for example, the next channel comes up or the volume increases. Now that Google has officially released the source code for Ice Cream Sandwich we are going to see it on a lot more devices. A couple of days ago we saw it running on the original Xoom and now the developers on xda-developers have managed to get it working on the Samsung Ace too.

I use the term ‘working’ loosely here because the ROM is far from being stable or even usable. Which explains why even before you start reading about it you can see the words “Only for developers!” and “IT CAN KILL YOUR PHONE!” being written on top of the post. Read more »

Hackers and modders have already figured out ways around Apple’s encrypted servers to bring the iPhone 4S‘s previously exclusive voice assistant Siri to Apple’s older i-devices.

Now however it looks like Apple might have undergone a change of heart, or at least allowed a lapse in security. There are still no official plans from Apple to bring Siri to the iPhone 4, but there are clues in iOS 5.0.1 that could give 4 users some Siri goodness via other means. Read more »

One of the most unusual smartphones that you have seen just landed in our office – the Meizu MX. At its core, it’s an Android phone, but it takes a lot of design cues from the iPhone. What’s unique about it is that it’s from a Chinese company – a lot of companies have their gadgets assembled in China, but this one was also designed there.

China has all the potential to become a tech powerhouse – and the Meizu MX is probably just the first of many high-end gadgets that have an actual chance of dethroning the current top phones. Read more »

The Prada Phone by LG 3.0 has just been announced in London, and if you think it looks great on the outside with its slim body, metal accents and the Saffiano leather-looking plastic cover at the back, just wait to see how Prada and LG have pimped the look of the Android OS as well.

Prada are very proud with what they have done design-wise to the look and feel of the Android 2.3 running on the Prada 3.0 and it shows.
