Windows Phone 8 camera interface to support pinch zooming and third-party addons

Adding pinch-zooming to the camera interface is nothing to shout home about, but the addition of third-party plugins certainly is. All smartphone users have their favorite photo apps, but imagine having them all inside the main camera interface. That’s what the new camera lenses feature on Windows Phone 8 promises.

As Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore demoed today, when you install a new camera-centric app from the Marketplace, it integrates as a sort of a lens, an add-on inside your main camera app. So when you start the camera, you have all the special effects, panoramas and image manipulation tricks, in one place. Confirmed: Built-in screenshot capabilities coming with Windows Phone 8

Today, Microsoft’s Corporate VP for Windows Phone, Joe Belfiore, stepped on stage to demo some never before released features of the upcoming Windows Phone 8 in honor of the unveiling of the new generation of Nokia Lumia phones. One of the first features he was to quick to show, was the new built-in screenshot feature that comes with the new iteration of the mobile OS.

Now built-in screenshots are really not a make-or-break feature for any mobile OS, but we guess the presentation stated with that as an ice-breaker. Read more »

The joint Nokia/Microsoft announcement today is over. We saw the unveiling of the Nokia’s new Lumia 820 and Lumia 920. What we didn’t hear however, is when these devices will launch – along with Windows Phone 8 as a whole. Or did we?

Nokia has sold 7 million Lumia smartphones, availability extended to 54 countries

Nokia used the floor of its just finished New York Windows Phone 8 event to reveal some statistics on its Lumia smartphones and their market performance thus far.

Nokia eats Jellybeans for breakfast, will ride the sugar rush during today’s event

Nokia is pumping themselves up for the Nokia World event that is about to start in less than an hour. Instead of talking to themselves in the mirror like a movie character would, the Finnish company took to Twitter and posted photos like this one:

Nokia 808 PureView used to replace a professional cinema camera, does an amazing job

We already know the Nokia 808 PureView has an amazing camera. It even managed to beat a micro four-thirds camera in our blind test from a while ago. We are still blown by the result of the experiment by the Swedish video professional Christopher Westerholm, who gave the cameraphone a even more advanced task – replacing a cinematic camera.

He ended up with an impressive 120-second video showcasing what the Nokia 808 PureView is capable of when in the hands of a someone who knows what he’s doing. Read more »

Face-to-face meet-up with the Sony Xperia miro

Sony brought so many new smartphones to IFA that we almost forgot about the Xperia miro. Almost. The handset was announced back in June and is expected to hit the market next month, but it was showcased at the company’s booth.

Specs-wise, the Xperia miro has lots of common internals with the Xperia tipo but offers two major upgrades – a 0.3″ bigger LED-backlit LCD screen and a 5 megapixel snapper. Thanks to the LED-backlit upgrade, the phone is also thinner and lighter. Read more »
