Nokia releases two new cool-looking portable chargers

Nokia has announced the availability of two new portable mobile chargers – the DT-601 wireless charger and the DC-19 universal portable USB charger.

The DT-601 wireless charger is not actually a charger even though Nokia calls it that, but a wireless charging plate ending up in USB port. It is much smaller than its DT-900 predecessor and will easily fit in pockets. The DT-601 is Qi compatible and you can get it in yellow, cyan, bright red, black and white. Read more »

PayPal announces Beacon, a Bluetooth USB dongle that will accept your smartphone as a hands-free payment method

Meet the PayPal Beacon, a USB dongle, powered by Bluetooth Low Energy that will await PayPal customers in participating stores, recognize their PayPal identity by pairing to their smartphone’s PayPal app as they walk in and even let them automatically pay for their goods, no hands required.

The first participating stores are Booker, Erply, Leaf, Leapset, Micros, NCR, PayPal Here, Revel, ShopKeep, TouchBistro and Vend, but more are expected to crop up as 100 developers are poised to get the dongle and API early. Samsung Galaxy Gear goes official, works only with the top end of the Galaxy line

Samsung jumped head first into the smartwatch field with the Galaxy Gear. It’s made out of stainless steel for the body and futuristic material for the strap. The heart of Gear is a 1.63″ Super AMOLED touch screen with 320 x 320 resolution (that’s 277ppi pixel density).

In a throwback to the S9110 watch phone, the Galaxy Gear features a speaker and mic, so it can handle calls (with a noise cancellation mic), but also understand voice commands with S Voice. Read more »

Apple’s iWatch is one of the most hotly anticipated gadgets, especially after reports that Samsung will be launching its Galaxy Gear smartwatch next week. However, according to the latest gossip, Apple’s iWatch is not coming anytime soon and is expected to launch only in the second half of 2014.

According to an analyst at CIMB Group, 60% of Apple’s iWatch orders are expected to be manufactured by Invetec, the Taiwan-based ODM. The deal is expected to generate about 19% of Invetec’s profits in the coming year. Read more »

Samsung Mobile EVP confirms the Galaxy Gear smartwatch for IFA, says screen not bendable

The rumor mill has been pretty confident that he Unpacked 2 event on September 4 on IFA grounds will bring the new Galaxy Note III phablet and the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, but now there’s official confirmation straight from the EVP of Samsung Mobile.

The EVP, Lee Young-hee, calls it a “concept wearable device” and says it’s aimed at young trend-setters. Samsung is confident that the Galaxy Gear will shake things up in the mobile industry. Read more »

Hyetis Crossbow goes on pre-order – 500 unit limited edition run for $1,200 each [UPDATED]

The Hyetis Crossbow pre-order campaign has begun – for $1,200 you can have one of the first Swiss-made smartwatches. Note that this is a limited run of 500 units. The watch should have a 41MP camera sensor (actual resolution subject to change) with optical zoom, an authentic Swiss watch movement and more connectivity than you thought possible.

The watch body will be made from grade 5 titanium with a “Dark Knight” finish. It has a sapphire glass on the front with anti-glare coating and is waterproof up to 250m. Read more »

iFixit takes apart Nexus 7 2 and gives it a good score, Chromecast also disassembled

It would be a big shame if something on your brand new Nexus 7 2 broke, but as it turns out if it did, it wouldn’t be too hard to repair. iFixit took the new 7” Google tablet apart and awarded it a repairability score of 7/10.

The team also took apart a Chromecast, but mostly out of curiosity – the $35 stick is made out of a plastic enclosure and a motherboard, there’s nothing to repair there. Read more »

Google stops complementary three month Netflix subscription offer for Chromecast

When Google announced the Chromecast at their event a couple of days ago, the $35 price was low enough for a lot of people to purchase it without giving it a second thought. What made the deal even better was that Google was giving away three months of Netflix subscription to both current as well as new subscribers, which usually costs almost as much as the Chromecast.

Unfortunately, just one day after announcing the product and the offer, Google has now discontinued it. Google has stated that it is due to the overwhelming demand for the product that they had to withdraw the offer. While the device is still pretty cheap and you can cast Netflix if you’re running it in Chrome, the bait and switch tactic might not sit well with some of the potential customers. Read more »
