Apple has finally updated the last of its own apps for the new iOS 7, Find My Friends. As you may have seen with apps like Podcasts and iBooks, Apple has been quite late in updating its own apps for its own operating system but finally they managed to get all of them updated.

The latest Find My Friends update gets rid of all the previous corinthian leather and stitching that would put the insides of a Bentley to shame in favor of clean, simple design with translucency effects for the top bar. A leaked internal document coming out of China reveals that the proprietary Nokia Music service will be coming to Android and iOS as a web app.

Android pretty much rules smartphones in terms of market share, but Apple held a firm grasp on tablets. In the third quarter this year things changed though and Android tablets surpassed iPads in revenue for the first time ever.

According to an analyst from Morgan Stanley, Android-powered tablets raked in 46.2% of the revenue, while iPads took 45.6% home. Read more »

In a spectacular show of laziness, Apple finally got around to updating their own application to match the look of their own operating system. iBooks for iOS 7 finally sports a new look that is more in line with the rest of the OS.

First thing you’ll notice is that the icon has changed. The wood textured icon of the past has now been replaced with an orange one with an open book in the center. Apple continues the tradition of creating utterly lackluster icons post iOS 7 and this new one is just one of the many that actually looks worse than its iOS 6 counterpart. Read more »

Google has updated the Gmail app for iOS that brings some new UI changes specifically for the iPad. One of the changes is a new sidebar in the landscape view that lets you quickly toggle between different inbox categories and even accounts. It also shows you the number of unread messages in each category.

The portrait view has been updated to fill the entire screen so you see your messages even better. There is also a fullscreen message editor that makes better use of the large tablet display. Other than that Google has also improved the scrolling on the iPad. Read more »

Facebook has released an update to the Facebook Messenger app for iOS and Android that brings with it a complete overhaul of the UI. The design clearly looks like it was made for the new iOS 7 but carries over to the Android version as well.

At launch you’ll notice that the older dull gray and Facebook blue colors have been replaced by bright white and a brilliant blue combination. There are no more gradients and drop shadows anymore and the UI has a clean, flat UI that is consistent with the rest of iOS 7. Read more »

Last year, when Apple replaced the Google Maps application on iOS with their own Apple Maps, the company was blasted by everyone, including Apple fans, to the point where Apple had to issue an apology to customers and highlight other mapping apps in the App Store. A year later, however, things are looking a bit better.
