Beta of Windows 8 a.k.a. Next could be ready by September, RTM in mid-2012?

What do you know, it turns out that Windows 8 may be surprisingly close – a leaked roadmap has led to speculation that Windows 8 (codenamed Windows Next) could turn up in beta form at Microsoft’s Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in September.

Android 3.0 Honeycomb ported on Nexus One, port still at very early stages

It turns out that Android 3.0 Honeycomb is not just for tablets – XDA-Developers already have an alpha version of a Honeycomb ROM running on the Google Nexus One.

The screen on the Nexus One is too small for comfortable use of the Honeycomb UI, but I think that the possibility of such a ROM making it to the tablets that don’t have Honeycomb is more exciting… Read more »

HP will ship the TouchPad from April?

HP said we should expect their WebOS 3.0 debut tablet in the summer. It turns out that it may take them less to introduce the TouchPad to the market. An unofficial source claims that April is the launch month for the new device.

The slimmest smartphone in the world leaks, heads right off to Japan

If you have a thing for smartphones as thick as credit cards you might start packing. You see the 7.7mm-measuring Android Froyo-running NEC Medias N-04C has just leaked, but it’s headed for the Japanese market.

The NEC Medias is headed to NTT DoCoMo, the largest carrier in the country of the rising sun, and we suspect its announcement should come soon (after all the promo materials are obviously ready). Read more »

Was MWC 2011 all about tablets this year? Here are all the slates we saw

Tablets dominated much of the attention at the Mobile World Congress and with good reason. Some of the new phones weren’t terribly impressive, while there were plenty of new things in the tablet world.

Android tablets exploded in numbers. There were also two new tablet platforms (PlayBook’s OS and webOS on the TouchPad). A handful of Windows 7 tablets were on the MWC grounds too.

Imagination Technologies announces Series6 PowerVR graphics – will be at least 20x faster than the current gen

You may not have heard of Imagination Technologies, but that’s because they don’t sell anything directly to consumers. What you should have heard is their PowerVR series of graphics chips for mobile phones. The iPhone 4 has one of these babies integrated into its custom Apple A4 platform, and so do a long list of other handsets such as the LG Optimus 3D, Google Nexus S, Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Wave, Sony Ericsson Vivaz, iPhone 3GS, Nokia N900, Palm Pre, Motorola Milestone 1 & 2. Foursquare is now available for Nokia Series 40 phones

Congrats to all Nokia S40 owners, as Foursquare is finally released for their devices today. If you haven’t heard of Foursquare until now, it’s an unobtrusive way to share your location with friends and explore new and interesting places.

Chrome 10 beta boosts JavaScript performance by 66%, Opera releases v11.10 Barracuda developer snapshot

Hot on the heels of yesterdays tease about Firefox 5, Chrome and Opera web browsers are venturing bravely into double-digit version numbers – Chrome 10 is finally available as a beta, and Opera is showing off version 11.10. Opera already has v11.01 as stable so the update is fairly minor.

Firefox 5 gets on stage, while Firefox 4 is yet in beta

It might sound a bit strange, but the User Experience team at Mozilla Corporation has already started working on how the Firefox 5 user interface will look like and we have some screenshots for you. Yes, even though the first Firefox 4 Release Candidate is expected to come out in late February or even early March, the UX engineers have already started throwing in ideas on how the user experience could be improved for the future version of my all-time favorite browser.
