The browser on S40 phones has always been a bit of a disappointment and one of the many weak areas in the OS. Anyone with even a remote interest in web browsing would choose Opera Mini over it any day. But now Nokia has launched an updated version of the browser, which is still in beta but can be downloaded from Nokia Labs or the Ovi Store, and plans to make up for its predecessor’s shortcomings.
Among the list of features in the new 1.0.3 version is a combined URL and search box, so you don’t have to dig through the menu to perform a quick search of the web. Also among the list of additions is a drop-down toolbar that houses options such as the ability to post the link to the current page on Twitter or Facebook and even an option to translate the text on the current page to the default language of the device. The Motorola Photon 4G for Sprint caused some salivation when it was announced in early June and now we have the two last pieces of the puzzle – the pricing and the exact launch date.
The dual-core droid is a CDMA phone with 4G connectivity (WiMAX in this case), but it works on GSM networks, too. Still, if you want one, you’ll have to sign a 2-year contract with Sprint. Read more »
Two independent analyst companies just published their reports on the computer market in the US and they both show that Apple is now the third largest vendor in the country. The Cupertino-based company has now slotted in front of Toshiba and Acer in terms of units shipped.
Along with Apple, Toshiba is the only other company, which has increased its sales in Q2 2011, compared to Q2 2010. The rest have all taken a step backwards, with Acer taking a particularly painful hit of 22.6% or 25.4%, depending on who you believe. Read more »
Apple has altered the currency conversion rates for some of its international App Stores, which has led to changes in pricing for users outside the US. Some countries, like Australia, have benefited from the change, while others, like the UK have seen the iOS app prices rise.
The cheapest paid apps in Great Britain are now going for 69p, rather than 59p, which is an almost 17% increase. The positive change in Australia is by about the same margin, the former 1.19 AUD apps now going for 99 Australian cents. Read more »
Back in April when the iPhone secret location tracking took over the media attention, Apple was quick to dismiss it as a non-issue and said it wasn’t doing anything wrong. However, that’s not what the Changwon District Court in Sourth Korea thinks as it has just ordered the Cupertino-based company to pay compensation to a user because of it.
In fact Reuters reports that Apple has already made the payment of $946 to Mr. Hyung-suk (not surprisingly, a lawyer himself). And while that kind of cash will hardly make Steve Jobs lose his sleep, what will follow next might. Apparently, the law firm that won the case is gearing up to launch a class action against Apple. Photography fans and Rude Goldberg machines fans checks this out. We stumbled upon the most complex setup, designed to perform the simplest of tasks – take a portrait photo. Created using almost exclusively photography gear this is certainly going to make every camera enthusiast tremble.
Obviously the amount of effort that went into designing this is mind-blowing, and the cost of the gear used could probably buy you a decent family sedan. And since words couldn’t possibly describe all the action that’s going on in the video, we aren’t even going to try. Read more »
PayPal has announced a cool new way to transfer money from one person to another. It involves the use of the NFC technology found in some of today’s smartphones.
To make this work, all you have to do is install the PayPal widget on your phone. Then you enter the amount that you want to receive in this widget and touch your phone to the person’s phone who will be sending you the money. Once the phone vibrates, the other person is asked to enter their pin number, following which the transaction is completed and you get the money along with a confirmation email. Read more »
They took their sweet time with it but Twitter has finally updated the Android version of their mobile app to include two of the most requested features; push notifications and multiple accounts.
As the name suggests, push notifications gives you updates about your @mentions, direct messages and tweets instantly without you having to manually refresh or set an automatic refresh duration. Having personally tested this feature I can say it works as advertised. Read more »
You may remember Sony Ericsson’s Facebook competition that asked its fans to do video reviews of the txt pro and the Mix Walkman. Today, we have the Sony Ericsson txt pro in our office and we thought we should take it for a quick spin on video too.
The txt pro is an extra tiny phone and it’s got its eye on messaging – and more specifically, social networking messaging. The slide-out QWERTY is more comfortable to use than you might think just by looking at it (it really is quite small), but it adds to the thickness of the phone, pushing it up to 18mm. Read more »
The place to get Blackberry apps, the App World, has just rounded off its first full billion of downloads. It took the BlackBerry app repository a little over two years to achieve this feat. Of course, the download rate is speeding up and if the current download rate (3 million per day) is retained, the next billion should come in less than half that time.
However, impressive as those numbers might sound in isolation, they aren’t quite as good as those of some other app stores out there. Read more »
The Anna update brings quite a lot of changes to the Symbian platform and Nokia is obviously worried that some of them might go unnoticed by the users. That’s why the company has released yet another video demonstrating the latest version of their mobile OS.

Google continues its offensive on the social networking world with a new photo sharing service called Photovine. Today they’ve released a quick teaser video (it used to be just a two line description and a mockup image), which gives us a basic idea of what the service will be about.
The tagline of Photovine is “Plant a photo, watch it grow” – basically, you post a photo with a two or three word description. Then other people send back photo requests of their own on that topic. Read more »
HP and AT&T just announced that the US carrier will be getting a pimped up version of the TouchPad in time for the back-to-school season. The AT&T-edition of the webOS slate will have its dual-core CPU clocked at 1.5GHz, rather than the 1.2GHz of the regular one.
The AT&T-bound TouchPad will also be packing 4G connectivity, which will make it the first version of the slate with network data connectivity. Unfortunately, this won’t be an LTE radio, but a 3G one with 21 Mbps HSPA capabilities, but that’s still cool. Read more »
