If you are a registered developer with Apple you can get the iOS 5 GM right now. The rest of the users will have to wait a few days until October 12.

We already covered most of the iOS 5 features in our iOS 5 beta review. Surely Apple held a few surprises for the launch, but most of the important stuff we already know.

This is the iPhone family in the US – prices, capacities and carriers (Sprint’s in)

by 5 comments

Well, there’s no iPhone 5, just the 4S. But what of the older models? In a surprising move, Apple decided not to deprecate the 3GS, which puts the number of iPhone models currently available to three.

First of all, the iPhone 4 was just put in the “old” category and it will remain in the portfolio only in its 8GB version. Read more »

Apple unveils a microUSB adapter for users in Europe

by 21 comments

Apple adds a new accessory to its portfolio – the iPhone microUSB adapter. It does just what it says on the box – allows you to use standard microUSB cables and chargers with your iPhone both for syncing(!) and charging.

The unveiling of such a gadget might not seem so surprising at first look, but it actually represents an end of an era where Apple’s closed eco system relied solely on proprietary hardware and peripherals to run and interconnect. Read more »

Siri for iPhone 4S, the voice-controlled digital assistant, is not as new as you may think

by 31 comments

Siri is now an integral part of the iPhone 4S. It’s supposed to do a lot of stuff for you, among which, answer any question you may come up with. You can ask about anything – the weather, movies, restaurants, news, etc. and providing you have an intelligent question, it should get you a reasonably intelligent answer quickly and in the right context.

But Siri is not just an intelligent voice search system. It can also read your messages, emails, notifications for you. Siri has dictate functionality too – you speak and it writes messages, notes, remainders, etc. Read more »

Apple’s stock plummets as the company fails to announce an iPhone 5

by 28 comments

In spite of the never-ending rumors that flooded us like torrential rain in the past weeks, Apple didn’t announce the highly anticipated iPhone 5 with its rumored 4-inch screen and new slimmer body. Unfortunately for Apple, this is having a negative effect on many of their shareholders.

It appears that the newly introduced Apple iPhone 4S isn’t what shareholders were hoping to see at this evening’s Apple event. The shares of the company took quite a plunge after the announcement, currently selling at 5% lower than their opening rate today.

iPhone 4S camera said to be the fastest, beating even the Nokia N9

by 43 comments

So, Apple has just announced the next iPhone – 4S – with big improvements in the camera department. The iPhone 4S packs an 8 megapixel camera with LED flash and 1080p camcorder. But that’s just the beginning.

First you get lots of new technology improvements – back-illuminated sensor with 5 elements lens, F/2.4 aperture, hybrid IR filter, etc. So, all this new stuff will get you better colors, better noise performance, more sharpness and better white balance. There is face detection and the HDR feature is present too along with an AE/AF lock.

But the iPhone 4S has lots of (cameraphone) competitors already available, so it needs to do better. According to Apple, the iPhone 4S camera might just be the fastest cameraphone around. We have to see if it is the best for real, but we get some really impressive times for the first photo and shot-to-shot. Read more »

iPhone 4S photos pop up on Apple’s site, should be released on October 14th

by 16 comments

It’s time to shed any remaining doubt about the iPhone 4S (not that there was much left). Images from Apple’s own website show the black and white 4S model (the file name clearly says “4s”), that is practically indistinguishable from the iPhone 4.

However, have a closer look at the icon just above the “Phone” app. It’s the Newsstand app, which is a part of iOS5 – the OS that the 4S will launch with. Read more »
