We had talked about the upcoming racially diverse emoji in iOS and OS X a few weeks ago but it finally started rolling out in yesterday’s iOS 8.3 and OS X 10.10.3 update. It’s not often the emoji stack gets updated and this is by far the biggest update it has received in years, so let’s take a closer look at it.

The main change here was to diversify the skin color of the various faces. Emoji usage has exploded since Apple adopted it in iOS back in 2011 and a lot of people care about this now for the skin color of the faces to actually be an issue. Read more »

Facebook Messenger now has its own standalone website

by 48 comments

Facebook has launched a standalone website for its Messenger service. This is already accessible at Messenger.com, where you can go and use only that functionality from Facebook’s main site. The company is adamant that this doesn’t mean Messenger will ever go away from Facebook.com.

However, Messenger was once part of the Facebook apps for mobile – but then it got pulled out, thus forcing people to install the standalone Messenger app alongside the main one. So, in the future, there’s still a slim chance we’ll see something like that happen on the Web too. Read more »

Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition for Galaxy S6 goes on pre-order in Japan on April 23

by 25 comments

Back in March, Samsung announced the new Gear VR Innovator Edition headset alongside the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. This new version of its Oculus-powered VR accessory is made specifically to work with those two devices only, just like the original Gear VR is tailor-made for the Galaxy Note 4.

Now that the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are almost up for grabs globally, the Korean company has announced when it’s going to take pre-orders for the Gear VR Innovator Edition as well. One caveat, however: the following information applies only to Japan. It’s unclear why Samsung chose to give us the launch details for this market first. Perhaps the interest for the new Gear VR has been the highest over there. Read more »

Xiaomi is turning 5 today and the party is on with promotions and giveaways

by 23 comments

Chinese manufacturer, Xiaomi, is celebrating its fifth birthday and the company is in an all-out festive mode. The manufacturer has always had a strong online community and has really managed to build brand value and awareness, an area where most other Asian businesses fail, and naturally the community forum has been booming with festivities and a fair deal of promotions.

To mark the veritable 5-year corner stone, Xiaomi is looking back and recapping all that it has achieved throughout the years. The company has been steadily gaining popularity, especially in its home market, where it currently presides at the very top of the mobile market food chain. International presence has also been extending, especially in India, where the manufacturer recently partnered up with both Snapdeal and Amazon, for an even broader market reach. Read more »

Scientists make a breakthrough in aluminum batteries

by 87 comments

Scientists from the Stanford University made a breakthrough in the aluminum batteries – an area that saw very limited innovation in the last decade. The new prototype aluminum battery is flexible, thinner, much safer, charges super-fast, and its lifecycle is 7.5 times better than Li-Ion batteries.

Today the Li-Ion batteries seem to have reached their full potential and the only improvement lately is the fast charging technologies provided by companies like Oppo and Qualcomm. The lithium batteries aren’t getting any thinner, smaller and their capacity increases at very modest rates. We need something better and the aluminum battery at Stanford might be just the discovery we need today. Read more »
