LG dominates global smartwatch display market in first quarter of 2015

LG claimed around 67% of the global smartwatch display market and a whopping 91% share of the revenue in the first quarter of the ongoing year, according to a latest report from market research firm DisplaySearch.

As per the report, LG shipped 8 million display units in Q1, 2015, up from 1.1 million units it shipped in the same quarter last year. It was followed by Japan Display, Futaba, and Sharp with 1.4 million, 1.12 million, and 900,000 units, respectively. Read more »

Samsung Gear A round smartwatch has some features detailed through SDK release

As it promised last month, Samsung has now made the software development kit (SDK) available for its next smartwatch. This will allow developers to have apps ready for when the watch will hit the streets, but it also means we get to discover some of the features of the device.

Samsung’s next wearable will be a round smartwatch, as the company itself has already confirmed. According to past rumors, it will be sold as the Gear A, though its maker is for now referring to it only as “The Next Gear”. Its codename is Orbis. Read more »

Moto 360 successor probably got Bluetooth certified

Motorola is clearly working on a successor to the Moto 360, its first ever smartwatch. And now it looks like this upcoming wearable has been certified by the Bluetooth SIG.

As you can see, a “Motorola Android Device” bearing the model number BTMW03 has been listed by the authority that handles Bluetooth certifications. Considering that the Moto 360 has the model number BTMW01, this is in all likelihood its successor. Read more »

Skype Translator preview is now open for everyone

Skype Translator has been available as a closed preview since December of last year, but starting today everyone can use it. You just download it from the Windows Store, and start using it. You will however need to have either Windows 8.1 or the Windows 10 preview on your PC or tablet.

Skype Translator is the Sci-Fi-like bit of software that translates what you say into another language in near real-time. For spoken languages, it currently works with English, Spanish, Italian, and Mandarin. So you could be talking to someone in English, while that person would hear a Spanish translation of what you’ve just said – alongside a collapsible transcript window. Read more »

Apple in talks with China’s Alibaba group, banks over Apple Pay launch

Apple is currently negotiating with Chinese banks as well as Internet conglomerate Alibaba over the launch of Apple Pay in the country, according to CEO Tim Cook. In an interview with Xinhua, China’s state-run new agency, he said, “We very much want to get Apple Pay in China,” adding that “I’m very bullish on Apple Pay in China.”

Launched back in September last year, Apple’s mobile payments service has been continuously gaining ground in the US, where the Cupertino-based company has partnered with over 180 financial institutions till date. Giphy for Gmail is a Chrome extension. Once you install it, you’ll see a new rainbow button inside Gmail’s Compose screen, alongside the text formatting options. Leaked doc reveals HTC is planning on introducing ads into Blinkfeed

HTC hasn’t been doing so well in the past few years, if you look at smartphone sales numbers as well as profits. But it looks like the company will soon try to make some money off its software too, and not just hardware. A leaked document purportedly originating at HTC shows us plans for introducing ads into Blinkfeed.

As you may know, Blinkfeed is the home screen newsfeed that’s built into HTC’s Sense UI that sits atop Android in all the devices it ships. Blinkfeed has been released into the Google Play Store a while back, allowing for faster updates. And now it looks like one such future update could bring with it ads. Read more »

AT&T launches its first own-brand tablet, the Trek HD with 4G LTE support

AT&T is releasing a new Android tablet tomorrow, but it’s the first one to actually bear the carrier’s brand. The AT&T Trek HD is going to become available online on May 12, and in stores nationwide on May 15.

It’s an 8-incher with “HD” screen resolution (we’re guessing that means 1,280×800), a 5 MP rear camera, a 2 MP selfie shooter, and 16GB of expandable internal storage. Read more »

Edge variant of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 phablet spotted on HTML5test site

The Edge variant of the next Samsung Galaxy Note phablet, which is said to be internally codenamed Project Noble, has been spotted on benchmarking website HTML5test. The website scores web browsers in their ability to properly load HTML5 elements.

The test was performed on the Samsung browser 3.2 installed on a Samsung ZenZero device running Android 5.1.1 – ZenZero is said to be the internal name of the Galaxy Note 5 Edge. The browser got 503 points, which is a great score – the best-faring currently available mobile browser Chrome 39 scores 493. Read more »

Snapdragon 818 specs leak, 10-core processors inside

Snapdragon 810 didn’t turn out as great as many was hoping for – it is plagued by overheating issues and one major player – Samsung – has even opted out of Qualcomm’s services. Mediatek announced recently a new lineup of high-end SoC models with 10 and 12-core CPU configuration and the race for the next generation is now officially on.

The chip maker seems to be working on the 810 successors already – the Snapdragon 818 – and the purported specs are now out. Apparently the S818 SoC will also offer a 10-core processor, new and powerful Adreno 532 GPU, and LTE Cat. 10 connectivity. Read more »

OnePlus has officially launched its 10000mAh Power Bank in India, exclusively on Amazon. The Power Bank is available in Sandstone Black or Silk White and is priced at Rs. 1,399 ($22).

The OnePlus Power Bank has a capacity if 10000mAh with two USB out ports capable of 5V 2A each but if you have two devices connected simultaneously each one drops down to 5V 1A. The Power Bank has the same finish as the OnePlus One and comes with an LED charge indicator that can be activated by gently shaking the power bank. Read more »
