Tizen OS was thrown into the fray at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona right away as Samsung announced the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches.

According to a report in USA Today, the upcoming refresh of the Samsung Galaxy Gear will boot Tizen OS. The Korean giant is widely expected to launch its next generation smartwatch alongside the Samsung Galaxy S5 next week, on February 24.

The Tizen Association announced today it is has started partnering with 36 major companies, which will bring a broader support for the Tizen OS at launch. The list includes notable tech companies, game publishers, electronic giants and mobile carriers.

This is great news for the Tizen platform and gives it a lot of potential for when it finally becomes commercially available. At the Tizen OS Developer Summit in Seoul, Samsung’s executive vice president Jong-Deok Choi revealed that the company’s NX-300M mirrorless camera actually runs Tizen. The camera has been on sale for a month now, but Samsung is just now breaking the news.

An under-the-radar company called Systena has launched a 10.1″ Tizen tablet in Japan. Don’t get too excited though as the slate is aimed exclusively at developers working with the OS.

The Systena-made tablet is part of a larger developer toolkit, which includes manuals, consulting services from the company and miscellaneous software tools. The tablet itself is powered by a 1.4GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Read more »

Samsung integrated its Bada OS into the Tizen OS project earlier this year and we even saw few screenshots of the brand new mobile operating system that was developed by the global market leaders. Now, the hands-images and the video of what seems to be the first Tizen powered tablet has been leaked.

Here’s the first official peek at Intel’s Tizen overlay dubbed Obsidian. It’s probably a very early build as you can see that the animations aren’t all that polished but we get too see what sort of UI dynamics Intel is planning for its own Tizen version.
