Looks like LG just decided to turn it all the way up to eleven. The latest television to come from the South Korean manufacturer is the LG 105UC9, boasting a spec sheet that is scarcely believable.

Well, first of all, this TV is 5K. Or at least that’s what LG is calling it, since it’s not an official term. The name comes from the resolution, which is an astonishing 5120 x 2160, which gives it an aspect ratio of 21:9. Chromecast, Google’s HDMI streaming dongle, has turned one year old today. And to celebrate the occasion, the search giant is giving everyone who owns a Chromecast a free 90-day subscription to Play Music All Access.

There are some caveats, though, chief among which is that the offer is only valid if you’re in the US. Furthermore, it’s not an option for anyone who has previously subscribed to All Access. About a couple of weeks ago LG boasted about its new 18-inch flexible OLED display panel, which can be rolled into a tube. It also announced that it’s developed a transparent OLED screen that has three times the amount of transmittance that the current crop of LCD displays offers. And today we get to see both of those on video.

The Korean company’s flexible OLED is really bendy, as it’s being rolled up to a radius of about 3 cm. The transparent display apparently has a 30% transmittance, which makes for a clearer viewing experience compared to LCDs. Read more »

4K TVs are slowly growing in popularity but to enjoy them to their fullest potential, you’ll need a good 4K video source. Sony’s 2012 and 2013 4K TVs don’t have native HEVC decoding, but the company is correcting this oversight with the new FMP-X5 player.

Google’s smart HDMI stick Chromecast, which turns any HDMI-capable TV into a smart TV with streaming capabilities from Youtube, Netflix, Hulu, and Google Play movies among others, has become officially available outside of the US.

The device goes on sale today in the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland, with localized streaming services for many of those countries. Read more »

Google’s Chromecast topped Amazon sales charts – it’s a small, cheap HDMI stick that streams video and music on your TV. But those use Google’s media library, Amazon can’t let that stand – and, apparently, it won’t.

Philips has officially announced that it will be coming up with Android-powered Smart TVs later this year. The company has also confirmed that its new television sets, which will be named Ambilight TVs, will have full access to Google Play Store as well as the firm’s own Smart TV apps.

Samsung’s new line of Ultra HD TVs will offer more than just higher resolution; they will also come with the ability to stream 4K video from various online services.
