The HTC One stretches out in the comfort of our test lab

by 66 comments

We’ve finally got the HTC One here at HQ. The preview is already up after our brief run-in with it on its unveiling in New York but we’re still eager to play with it and get down to ultrapixel level, if you know what I mean.

There’s much to like about the One. It’s HTC pulling all the stops and putting it all on the line against competition from Samsung, LG and Sony among others. Read more »

HTC One vs Sony Xperia Z quick camera shootout: Is less more?

by 176 comments

HTC One has just arrived at our office and is here to stay for a review. The HTC flagship is supposed to feature some advanced camera tech behind those 4 million+ ultrapixels, so the first thing we did was a quick impromptu shootout.

Unlike most of its competitors, the HTC One bets on fewer, but bigger size pixels on its image sensor, rather than many tiny ones. In theory this should allow it to shoot photos that have less digital noise and more dynamic range. But of course, you have got to remember that when you downsize a say, 13MP photo down to 4MP it also visibly decreases the digital noise.

Anyway, we would refrain from passing a judgement at this stage (we’ll save that for the full-featured review), but here are several comparison shots of the HTC One and the Sony Xperia Z, which has a rather densely packed 13MP camera sensor, featuring one of the smallest pixel sizes currently used in flagship products. Samsung Galaxy S4 cases confirm Galaxy S III-like shape

by 143 comments

UK retailer MobileFun has leaked purported cases for the Galaxy S4. If legit, the design of the cases confirms the look of Samsung’s upcoming flagship that appeared not only on an official teaser, but on video as well.

The cases will be sold in different colors and feature rounded edges looking awfully similar to those of Samsung’s current flagship. There are also holes for the alleged 13MP snapper and LED flash that’s now below the camera and not next to it, like on the Galaxy S III. Read more »

LG Optimus G Pro battery tests are over, here are the numbers

by 99 comments

The LG Optimus G Pro brings several upgrades over the regular Optimus G, including a big 3,140mAh battery, but also a new screen and updated chipset. Let’s find out if the increase in battery capacity offsets the higher power demands of the screen, which is both bigger and higher res.

Before we go on, we’d like to note that our Optimus G Pro review unit (which came from Korea) has a spare battery and a battery charger/phone stand in the box. The international version might not have these goodies. Read more »

Sony Xperia Z battery test is ready, here come the scores

by 239 comments

Sony Xperia Z was announced back at CES in January and its popularity grows bigger by the day. We have already had the Sony Xperia Z for quite a while in our office and its in-depth review is over here but once the MWC wrapped up we were also able to complete its battery test.

The smartphone has a large 2330 mAh battery to rely on, but the quad-core Krait CPU and the 5″ 1080p display are known to consume quite a lot of power. The fact that the battery isn’t user-replaceable puts even more pressure on the Xperia Z to do well here, and we were as curious as you are to find out if that’s actually the case. Read more »

LG Optimus G Pro flaunts its expansive screen and new features in our office

by 59 comments

The LG Optimus G Pro is the current king of phablets – other phablets couldn’t put up much of a fight against the 5.5” 1080p screen or the Snapdragon 600 chipset. The phablet market exploded after the first Galaxy Note came around and quickly went from niche to millions of units and LG has engineered the Optimus G Pro to be the best in that field.

The screen is pretty amazing – it has excellent viewing angles (better than the Optimus G screen) and great colors. Read more »
