Android’s app store has a reputation of having more free apps and games than the iOS store, which is good for consumers, but the iOS store is better known for bringing in more revenue, which is good for developers. According to App Annie that is still true, but the gap is closing.

The analysts at App Annie have taken the two types of paid apps into account – premium apps (you pay for the app) and freemium apps (the app is free, but you can pay for in-game purchases). Freemium apps are the primary revenue generators on both platforms, showing incredible growth. Read more »

It looks like there might be a divorce between Apple and Intel in the making. Report has emerged that the Cupertino giant is considering a replacement of Intel silicon in future Mac offerings for its own chips.

There are a total of 27.8 million tablets shipped worldwide in Q3 of 2012 according to a preliminary report from IDC. Compared to the same quarter last year, this is nearly 50% jump in sales and just 6.7% over the previous quarter.

Android tablet have started gaining more considerable market share, as Samsung has shipped 5.1 million tablets in the third quarter, which is twice as much as they managed in the previous quarter, and an increase of 325.0% from 3Q11, when it shipped 1.2 million tablets. Continuing the integration with important third-party applications, Apple is said to include another new feature in Siri in the upcoming iOS 6.1 update. While currently you can get movie ticket reviews and timings with iOS 6.1, in future you will also be able to purchase tickets through Siri.

This new feature comes courtesy of Fandango. You will see a button to purchase tickets in Siri when you search for show times or movie reviews. Moreover, you can also speak directly to Siri and ask to book the tickets for a particular movie. Read more »

After taking the arcade racing genre by storm with the original Need for Speed Most Wanted back in 2005, EA rebooted the series this year and put the steering wheel in the able hands of Criterion Games, makers of the popular Burnout games as well as Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.

This time, however, the action won’t be limited to the big screen. A mobile version of the game has been released for iOS and Android and although it’s not exactly the same game as the console version, you will find similar races, cop chases and a great roster of cars in what promises to be one of the best racing games on the mobile platform. Just as the UK Court ordered, Apple has now put a proper statement on the bottom of its UK homepage saying (in exactly 11pt font) that the previous statement didn’t comply with the order the court had issued.

Following the UK Court of Appeal ruling, Apple had to put a clear statement on its website saying that Samsung didn’t infringe on the iPad patents. And Apple did, but in a way that wasn’t what the judges really had in mind.

According to the official ruling, the guys from Cupertino had to clearly state on their UK website that “Samsung didn’t copy” the company’s designs. Instead, Apple posted a few paragraphs explaining in long how despite the UK’s ruling, courts in the US and Germany acknowledged that Samsung did infringe the company’s highly popular tablet. Google has released a new version of the Search app for iOS and it brings with it a greatly improved voice search experience that you may have experienced on Android devices running Jelly Bean.

The new Google Search app for iOS features a prominently placed voice search button below the search bar and one tap on it lets you speak your query to the device. Your words appear on the screen as soon as you speak them and then the app searches for the answer. For questions with short answers you also get a voice response, just like on Android. Read more »
