Amazon attacks Apple on its homepage, compares the Kindle Fire HD to the iPad Mini

by 166 comments

The 7-inch tablet wars just got serious. After the Nexus 7 got compared (in what I think were less than key areas) to the iPad Mini at the Apple’s event last week, now Amazon has flexed its muscle, pitting its Kindle Fire HD against the iPad Mini on its very homepage.

The online retailer has put up a big ad right on its homepage saying “Much more for much less” and made a comparison of its own 7-inch Kindle Fire HD against the iPad Mini, highlighting the display resolution, pixels per inch and most importantly – the price. Read more »

‘Sonic Jump’ for iOS game review

by 65 comments

Sonic Jump is the latest installment in the series of Sonic games for the mobile platform. However, unlike the other games that came before it, this is a brand new game and not just a port from some other platform. Update: It seems this is a remake of a J2ME game released on mobile several years ago.

With Sonic Jump, the series has taken a new direction, and I mean literally at that. Instead of the previous side scrolling or the third person sprinting, Sonic Jump takes you straight up, as you vertically jump from one platform to another. We decided to take a look and see how well this new experiment works. Read more »

The iPad mini has only started selling today but it’s already on backorder with the next shipments due for no sooner than 2 weeks across the world. The only exception is the US where the black version will still be delivered on the promised November 2nd.

It’s either that the white version is immensely more popular in the US or there were fewer white units available. Read more »

If you’ve used the Twitter client Tweetie or the official Twitter apps for iOS, Android and OS X, you have one person to thank for them: Loren Brichter. Brichter rose to fame with his excellent Twitter app, Tweetie, for iOS and Android. These apps were so good that Twitter acquired him and his apps and since then he made the Twitter apps for iPhone, iPad, Android and OS X.

The iPad mini software is designed to ignore your thumb resting on the display

by 63 comments

When Apple announced the iPad mini, one of the things I noticed was how thin the bezel is on the side. The iPad has a sizable bezel all around its display and Apple’s reason for that was to be able to hold the device without touching the screen. So why did they make the bezel so thin on the iPad mini?

At first glance it seems like a major design gaffe but turns out, it’s not. Because the bezel on the iPad mini is so thin on the sides, the software has been designed to ignore your thumb even if you rest it directly on the display. Read more »

Certain Apple Stores will replace your third gen iPad with a fourth gen model if bought within last 30 days

by 65 comments

Yesterday, Apple announced the new iPad mini but along with that also introduced a fourth generation iPad, just eight months after the third generation model was announced earlier this year. And it’s not a small update, either. The fourth generation model comes with a faster A6X processor that doubles the CPU and GPU power, faster wireless connectivity and the new Lighting port.

Naturally, if you bought the third generation model recently, you’d be feeling a bit jelly. But if you happened to have purchased that model in the past 30 days, you just might be in luck. Read more »
