If you remember, Google and Nestle had started a promotion contest for Android 4.4 KitKat, where they were giving people a chance to win a 2013 Nexus 7 tablet. All you had to do is purchase the special KitKat packs with the Android logo on them and message the code inside to a particular number.

Now that the contest is over, the winners are getting their hands on a brand new 2013 Nexus 7. Except for one country, where Nestle, who organized the contest, thought it was cool to give last year’s model instead. People from India who participated in the contest were promised the same 2013 model as everyone else in the promotional material but when it came to actually giving away the device, Nestle pulled a fast one and decided to give away the 2012 model. It’s not uncommon for developers to release a companion game on mobile whenever they release a major title on the consoles. These mobile versions often share the same name but offer nowhere near the same experience, with a different, watered-down version of the story and gameplay found on the console version.

Following the release of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Ubisoft has released a companion game called Assassin’s Creed Pirates on iOS and Android, with a Windows Phone 8 version coming later. The Wolf Among Us is a point and click action game based on the Fables comic book series. Created by Telltale Games, the same people who made the excellent ‘The Walking Dead’ series of games, The Wolf Among Us got rave reviews when it was launched on the PC and consoles a few months back.

Google has started rolling out an update to the Google Play app on Android, which brings with it some minor but useful changes. One of the changes is the way your app ratings now appear. The stars for the rating have been made larger and more prominent and the edit button for user reviews is also highlighted on the side once you leave a review. There is now also an option to delete your review if you wish.

Another addition is that Google Play will now show you if an app has in-app purchases. It won’t show you the items that are available for purchase the way iTunes does but at least you now have an idea if an app has IAP before downloading it. Read more »

Popular iOS photography app VSCO Cam has made its debut on Android. The application launched on iOS earlier this year and a few months back the developers started beta testing with Android version with a small group of people who signed up for it. Now the app is finally available on the Play Store.

For the uninitiated, VSCO Cam is an app that lets you capture, edit, store and share photos from your phone. It has a completely custom and minimal UI that is neither native to iOS nor Android and looks identical on both platforms. Despite its massive popularity, WhatsApp has been particularly laggard in updating its apps for new designs. So now three months after Apple released iOS 7, WhatsApp finally got around to releasing a design revision for the new OS.

As you can imagine, the new app uses the minimal white design inherent to iOS 7. You also get the new set of icons and the chat bubbles have been made flatter and less glossy. There is nothing groundbreaking here and the design sticks to the mew guidelines without attempting to do anything new. Read more »

Amazon has just announced its awesomely futuristic plans of delivering packages using unmanned aerial vehicles or drones. Called Amazon Prime Air, the goal of this delivery method is to ensure the product reaches the customer in under 30 minutes.

The system is designed to deliver small packages, typically those under five pounds, which tend to form over 86 percent of the orders at Amazon. Each of these will be put inside a container and then strapped to a drone, which will fly over and deliver it to your doorstep. Read more »

If you watched the recent Apple keynotes, Apple’s retort to the argument that Android devices are outselling iOS devices is that more people are actually using iOS devices as compared to Android devices. While Apple is known to blow things out of proportion in its keynotes, it’s not completely wrong on this.

According to data collected by IBM and Adobe while tracking Thanksgiving and Black Friday online shopping this year, they have come to the conclusion that iOS devices are far ahead of Android devices for being used to make these purchases. Read more »

Angry Birds Go! is the latest game in the Angry Birds series from Rovio and is the farthest departure from anything that has come before it. Like many franchises before it, including Mario, Sonic and Crash Bandicoot, Rovio turned to the go-kart racing genre for their popular franchise and now we have a go-kart racing game but with birds.

Angry Birds Go! was supposed to launch worldwide on multiple platforms on December 11 but Rovio has done a soft launch on iOS in the New Zealand region, so if you happen to be there the game is available for download for free. Read more »

Google has released a new extension for Chrome that will allow you to do searches within the browser using just your voice. Although voice search option has been available in Chrome for a while now, it required manually clicking on a button to activate it.

Now, using this extension, you can just say “Ok, Google” and the browser will automatically go into voice search mode, after which you can speak the rest of your query. This feature works as long as you are on the Google homepage or on a new Tab page. Read more »

After putting up a slew of videos slamming Google and actually selling merchandise on the store with the Scroogled logo on it, Microsoft is back with another video, this time making the Google Chromebook the target of their mockery.

This video actually features reality TV show personalities Rick Harrison and his father Richard Harrison from the show ‘Pawn Stars’. If you haven’t seen the show, it’s about this family who runs a pawn store where people come to sell strange and exotic items. The show is actually pretty decent, but I digress. Read more »

Google has released three new videos showing off the camera functionality on the new Nexus 5. The first video showcases the Photo Sphere feature, which was first seen on the Nexus 4, and lets you capture 360 degree panoramas. The second shows the new HDR+ feature and the last one shows the Auto Awesome feature, that generates animations from your burst shots.

All this would have been great had the camera on the Nexus 5 not been so underwhelming. The image quality is mediocre at best and the camera software itself, other than a couple of tricks, is utterly basic with a messed up viewfinder. Read more »
