HTC Explorer gets a cool video ad, new Sense claimed to be simpler and more intuitive than ever

by 12 comments

The HTC Explorer is one of the strongest soldiers in the Android squad dispatched to storm the low-end and as such it’s no wonder that it’s getting some special attention. Its manufacturer just released a cool video promo of the affordable smartphone, which does a pretty good job of summing up its key features.

The HTC Explorer isn’t a smartphone to impress you with a gazillion megahertz CPU or an umpteen megapixel camera – that’s a task for the Sensation to handle. With the little one it’s all about simplicity of use, intuitiveness and easy personalization that will attract new smartphone adopters. Read more »

Adobe Flash Player 11 and AIR 3 now available for desktop and Android

by 23 comments

The i-dotting and t-crossing is complete and Adobe released the latest versions of their Flash Player and AIR. Available to desktop operating systems and compatible mobile platforms, Adobe Flash Player 11 and AIR 3 promise a dramatic improvement in performance.

The new releases finally enable 3D hardware acceleration, which should allow much more demanding applications to run smoothly even on mobile platforms. Android users will probably benefit the most from that, but some low-powered portable computers will get the chance to do Flash properly, too. Read more »

EXCLUSIVE: Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus hands-on

by 50 comments

We got to spend some time with a pre-release unit of the just announced Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus Honeycomb tablet and we are rushing to share our impressions with you. The compact, but powerful slate looks pretty promising and we bet many of you will be eagerly waiting for it to hit the shelves.

Unfortunately, the unit we had didn’t even power on so we’d just be focusing on the hardware, but we doubt there’s much about the Honeycomb 3.2 plus TouchWiz combo that still needs explaining anyway. Read more »

CyanogenMod adds ten Sony Ericsson smartphones to the list of supported devices

by 15 comments

Great news, Sony Ericsson fans! A version of the CyanogenMod 7 with support for all currently existing Sony Ericsson Xperia smartphones is on the way. The news was brought by the chief CM developers Steve Kondik, so it’s as official as it gets.

CM7 is an aftermarket firmware based on the open-source Android project, which has helped many droids to get updates long after their official support stopped. So if you are still sticking with your Xperia X8 or Xperia Mini, you will be able to repay them for their service with a portion of Gingerbread. Read more »

Linux-based Meltemi could be replacing S40 for Nokia’s low-end phones

by 53 comments

Nokia has just parted ways with its MeeGo platform, but the Finns are, reportedly, about to add another Linux-based platform with a windy name to its portfolio. Its name will be Meltemi and, unlike MeeGo, it will be designed with entry-level handsets in mind.

Although the company declined to comment on the matter, WSJ is confident that the company will be shifting the efforts of its software developers to lower-end products. Nokia is obviously looking to replace the S40 featurephone interface with a proper OS. Read more »

Skype for Android 2.5 brings video calls to 14 new droids

by 17 comments

Skype has updated its Android app, making it possible for 14 more members of the Google OS family to do video calls. That includes a couple of Sony Ericsson smartphones (Live with Walkman and neo V), three LG Optimus droids (2X, 3D and Black), the Japan-bound HTC Shooter, five Motorola handsets (Photon, Droid 3, Bionic and Atrix) as well as a couple of Honeycomb slates (T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Motorola Xoom).

Those 13 new video-capable Android devices join the 27 who got the feature enabled with previous releases of the Skype application. There seem to be no other major improvements brought by the 2.5.0.108 update, but we guess the usual portion of bug-fixes and optimizations was delivered as well. Read more »

Flickr has unveiled two new mobile applications to join its Arsenal. The image and video hosting service has officially landed on Android and the company has introduced a new Flickr Photo Session feature to celebrate that.

The Android Flickr client is pretty standard affair – it lets you take photos, edit them, and quickly upload them to Flickr, Facebook, Twitter or wherever else you see fit. It also improves the browsing and navigation, making it easier for you to keep an eye of your (and others’) photo libraries. Read more »

Amazon unveils three new Kindle readers, prices start at the unbelievable $79 (with a catch!)

by 10 comments

The Kindle Fire might have been the star of the Amazon show that just ended, but it wasn’t by any means the only major announcement. Along with the Android-based tablet came three eReaders, two of which have touchscreen control.

We got the new Kindle, which gets rid of the QWERTY keyboard and is 30% lighter at 170g and 18% more compact than its predecessor. What’s most important about it though is its price – it’s just $79 dollars. The only catch is, this price is valid only for the ad-supported Special Offers version (where that is available). If you don’t want any adverts on your homescreen you will have to part with $109 for the new Kindle. But there’s more. Read more »

Amazon announces the $199 dual-core Kindle Fire color tablet based on Android

by 30 comments

Boy, this is big! Amazon just unveiled their Android-running Kindle Fire slate and it’s looking like a real winner. The $199 tablet has a 7″ IPS LCD with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels and runs on a TI OMAP chipset with a dual-core CPU. Its screen has a Gorilla glass cover on top and a special anti-reflective coating that should make it fully usable outdoors.

Weighing 413 grams, the Amazon Kindle Fire is a relatively compact tablet at 190 mm x 120 mm x 11.4 mm and it’s thinner than the Nook Color, which has a profile of 12mm. The Kindle Fire has just 8 GB of internal storage, but Amazon is offering free online storage for any content you get from their ecosystem. That means some of the 18 million movies, TV shows, songs, magazines, and books that you can purchase from the tablet itself plus the apps from the Amazon Android app store. Read more »

Lara Croft and Guardian of Light game coming to Android as an Xperia PLAY exclusive

by 2 comments

Today Sony Ericsson announced that another block buster game will be landing exclusively on its Xperia PLAY smartphone. Square Enix will be bringing Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light to the gaming-centered droid in November.

[prm p="20244"][/prm]

Of course, that exclusivity is only valid if you are talking about the Android platform. The title has been available on iOS-running devices for quite a while now. Yet the developer has assured us that with the rich set of gaming controls available on the XPERIA Play this will be the best place to enjoy the game.

We guess that the Android exclusivity of the Lara Croft and Guardian of Light will be limited to a few months with the game becoming available for the other devices on the platform after that.

There’s still nothing mentioned about the pricing of the title, but it shouldn’t be higher than the $2.99 that it costs on iOS.

MeeGo to be merged into Tizen open source project, Samsung will join Intel on the helm

by 29 comments

There are some good news and some bad news for the MeeGo fans out there. The good news is that their platform isn’t dead, despite Nokia giving up on its development. The bad news is that MeeGo will have to go through another transformation in order to live on. So it’s so long to MeeGo, long live to Tizen.

Latest news is that Intel has finally found the partner it was looking for to help it shape MeeGo in Samsung. The Koreans will join Intel and The Linux Foundation in the development of Tizen – a new open-source project, of which Meego will become a part of. Read more »
