Google working on another messaging service for emerging markets

Google is reportedly working on a new messaging service for the emerging markets. It will compete against services such as WhatsApp, which is especially popular in India, along with Line, WeChat, and Viber.

One would wonder though as to why Google would bother with another service when it already has Hangouts, which replaced the previous Google Talk service. The new service will reportedly not require having a Google account (probably will just use your mobile number like WhatsApp). Evernote web update is simple and beautiful

Evernote has released a new beta version of its web app. The focus of this redesign was on simplicity and the designers seem to have achieved the desired result quite perfectly.

One of the reasons I don’t personally use Evernote web app or Evernote in general is because it comes across as too feature heavy (there is such a thing as too many features) and looks kinda cluttered for simple note taking purposes. The new beta does change that quite significantly. Read more »

European Commission allows Facebook to acquire Whatsapp

Last week we heard Facebook will get the approval of the European Commission for the Whatsapp deal and today this has been officially confirmed. The Commission gave the green light for the $19 billion dollar acquisition of the Whatsapp messaging service after US regulators gave it a thumbs up, too.

The European Commission reasoned that Facebook’s Messenger platform and Whatsapp are not close competitors and that competition is sufficient even after the merger. Read more »

Microsoft’s most powerful charger says farewell to Nokia branding

Microsoft has just announced the Microsoft Portable Power DC-21 – a 6,000 mAh charger available in three different bright colors. It is the most powerful charger by the company to date, but it is also the first one using the new branding – Microsoft.

Since Microsoft is dropping the Nokia branding already, I guess the rumors were true and upcoming phones and accessories will be Microsoft branded as well. Read more »

OnePlus shows the One quality test labs on video

OnePlus has decided to join in on the durability test bandwagon and showcase its stress labs with the OnePlus One being tortured.

If you’ve come here for a bend test, we’ll have to disappoint you, as the video doesn’t show one. OnePlus does test the phone in a scenario where you’re sitting on it. but unlike Samsung’s similar test where the Koreans apply 100kg of force on the Galaxy Note 4, OnePlus does so at just 25kg, though. LTE flavor of Nexus 7 (2013) now getting Android 4.4.4 KitKat

Flipboard is now available for Windows Phone devices

The popular magazine format app Flipboard is now available for Windows Phone 8.1 devices. The application is currently available to download in the Windows Phone App Store. It will also come pre-loaded on the freshly launched Nokia Lumia 830.

For the time being, Flipboard is available only for Windows Phone smartphones with at least 1GB of RAM. Read more »

Updated Dropbox for Android lets you export files to your SD card

Dropbox has updated its Android app, adding what had to be a top requested feature: the ability to export files from your Dropbox cloud storage to your mobile device’s SD card.

Moto 360 gets priced in India

The Moto 360 smartwatch looks like it’s getting closer and closer to a release in India. That’s because it’s been listed by Flipkart, the sole official seller of Motorola’s products in the subcontinent.

Furthermore, the Moto 360 has already been priced, even if it doesn’t have a shipping date attached just yet. If you want the round smartwatch, you’ll need to part with INR 17,999 (that’s about $292 or €230 at the current exchange rates). Read more »

New iClould tool lets you see if a used iPhone has been reported stolen

Apple’s iCloud has gained a tool that allows you to check a used iDevice and see if it has been reported stolen.

You just need to type in your device’s IMEI (usually located on the back of an Apple product or in settings) and the page will give you information if the device is activated under another Apple ID. Read more »

Samsung anticipates sales boost following Apple chip deal

Samsung is planning to start producing chips using its 14nm manufacturing process at the end of the year. It seems the company has managed to secure a deal with Apple and it anticipates a notable sales boost once it begins to deliver on it.

Kim Ki-nam, President of Samsung’s semiconductor business told reporters at the company’s HQ in Seoul that profits “will improve positively” once the deal goes through. Read more »

Tweetbot, the most popular third party Twitter client for iOS, has been updated for the new iOS 8 as well as the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

The list of iOS 8 related improvements include lockscreen notification shortcuts, where you can now slide notifications on the lockscreen to access additional functions, interactive notifications that pop down from the top and lets you reply instantly without leaving your current app, and sharing sheet support for sharing via Tweetbot.
