If you’re a PC gamer (or just a geek in general), you may have heard of the term V-sync. It works by delaying the image frame update until the vertical blanking interval of the display, so that there is no overlapping of frames that leads to screen tearing. While this does eliminate screen tearing, it causes performance issues with low framerate and a jerky mouse response. This leads to most people choosing to keep it disabled to get higher framerate and response at reduced visual quality.

The problem today is that LCD monitors usually have a fixed panel refresh rate of 60Hz and unless the GPU is attaining anything other than 60fps, the result is less than ideal performance. Cyber attackers have breached Adobe’s new Creative Cloud customer subscription model, and have gained access to some 2.9 million user accounts.

Lenovo is still dead set on delivering capable notebooks to market, despite crushing the handheld sales boards recently. After bringing a new range of ThinkPads prior to this year’s IFA and delivering the uber high-res Yoga 2 Pro ultrabook the company has decided to bump its existing lineup with the latest Intel chips from the Haswell series.

The series getting the update are the ThinkPad T, W, L and E. The higher-end of the bunch is the W540, moving down the T440P, T540P and the L440, L540 and E440, E540 laptops. All but the E series laptops will feature 4G connectivity as well. Read more »

Intel has officially announced its newest SoC, which is the world’s first chipset built on 14nm architecture. At the on-going Intel Developer Forum 2013 event in San Franciso, Intel’s CEO Brain Krzanich showed a functioning laptop that was running on the 14nm Intel SoC.

Moments before the ASUS IFA 2013 event kicks off, we get a little tasty treat in the form of a promo video, ASUS posted itself on YouTube. The video’s main focus is the precision-crafted ultrabook Zenbook UX301 and all its mouth-watering features.

The ultrabook will sport a 2560 x 1440 resolution atop that 13.3″ screen, which results in a really nice 220 ppi. Not only that, but the panel will be touch-enabled, which will play nicely with the touch-optimized Windows 8 that sits at the helm. Read more »

Acer is on a roll with new announcements at the IFA (which is actually yet to start). Among the long range of products they announced today is the Acer T272HUL monitor.

First of all, the T272HUL has a 27-inch WQHD VA panel, which means it has a resolution of 2,560×1,440, which is four times the resolution of a 720p panel. Secondly, it is a touchscreen panel with 10 point mult-touch support, so it will work great with Windows 8. Read more »

Sony and Panasonic have officially announced that they are working on the next-generation optical disc for long-term digital data storage. Both companies are planning to develop an optical disc with storage capabilities of at least 300 GB by the end of 2015.

The specifics of the optical disc, like protection against dust, water, temperature and humidity are the main reasons for Sony and Panasonic to still be investing in the format. Read more »

The Finnish extreme over-clockers “The Stilt” have set a new world record for clock speed. Using the AMD A10-6800K Richland APU, the guys managed to reach 8.2 GHz clock speed.

The AMD flagship chip was mounted on an ASUS F2A85-V Pro board and with the help of liquid nitrogen, the enthusiasts managed to reach a voltage of 2,008 volts and resulted in a core clock speed of 8,000.48MHz with its bus clock reading 126.99MHz. Read more »

Samsung is demonstrating its prowess beyond the mobile sector with the new NVMe SSD 2.5″ SSD, which can achieve the incredible read speeds of 3000MB/s.

According to Samsung, this is some 14 times faster than conventional enterprise HDD’s, and ten times faster than standard high-end SSD storage. Read more »

German retailer Arlt briefly published a pre-order page for the Samsung ATIV Q transformer device with a price of €1,599 with shipping beginning this August.

Samsung has confirmed that it has started mass production of the new PCIe-based (PCI-Express) solid-state drives, which bring about 2.5 times performance boost over current SATA-based drives and around 7 times more than a conventional 7200 RPM hard-drive.

AMD just claimed the title “First-Ever 5 GHz Processor” with its new FX-9590 based on the Piledriver architecture. That’s the official max frequency, not the work of an overclock-happy enthusiast. But the keyword is “max” – this is how fast the 9590 goes with Turbo Core 3.0 topped out and some of the cores powered off.
