Google PDF Viewer is the latest addition to what can definitely be considered Google’s office suite for Android. The application is, like the name suggests, nothing more than a lightweight PDF viewer. Now, you might be saying to yourself – “Why would I need that, Google Drive has one built-in”. And you would be absolutely true. But there is still a reason for the app to exist and a very good one.

You might remember, that a few days ago we reported on one of Google’s new Android endeavors – Android for Work. The project’s goal is to make your personal Android device much more organized and convenient to use both for work and outside the office. The idea is to have a separate set of applications that are dedicated to your business and are separate from your main apps. This, of course, means that Google has to begin launching a new set of productivity apps, which appear to mirror existing functionality, hence the Google PDF viewer. Read more »

The HTC One M9 is company’s latest flagship announced recently at the MWC in Barcelona. It packs a 5″ 1080p display, runs on the Snapdragon 810 chip and comes with a 20MP rear camera. The One M9 should be hitting the shelves as early as next month.

Acer has signed a partnership with Nuance, the company making Swype, to bring the virtual keyboard to current and upcoming smartphones of the company.

Swype is now shipping on Acer’s Liquid S1, Liquid S2, Liquid X1, Liquid Jade, Liquid Jade S as well as the E3, E600 and E700. To enable it, you have to go to the input and language settings on your phone and change the default keyboard to Swype. Read more »

Twitter is testing an internal browser for its Android app, which has been enabled for those on the beta channel. It’s a server side change that will automatically be enabled without having to update the app.

The current stable version of the Android app includes an optional quick read mode, that strips the page of its usual formatting and presents a simplified text and image view optimized for mobile reading. This new update will put the browser in your Twitter app, so links will look exactly like they do in Chrome. Read more »

Samsung has decided to create its own hands-on videos for the recently announced Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge. These include an ‘official unboxing’, in which the Korean company reveals the packaging of the handsets.

Sony introduced a nicely designed Sony BSP60 Smart Bluetooth Speaker at the MWC expo a few days ago. It looks quite futuristic and offers a plethora of functions.

When the speaker is fully opened, it’s reminiscent of a retro style alarm clock. It’s not merely a speaker with a built-in amplifier which just pumps out what you feed to it, though. It’s NFC-enabled and has its own display with 4 capacitive buttons to control volume and sift through its various functions. Read more »

Chrome on Android has really come a long way since its release back in 2014. 22 versions have been created, each one more capable than the previous and Android 4.0 – Ice Cream Sandwich was the scene, on which everything started.

The team behind Chromium, the open-source project which powers the development of the Chrome browser, has announced that it is leaving behind the software’s original Android 4.0 home, which will no longer be supported after version 42. Read more »

Glymspe has released a new application today, which is meant to simplify the usage of the location sharing service within vehicles. The new application is essentially an add-on to the main app and provides a new simplified dashboard interface as well as MirrorLink compatibility.

If you are unfamiliar with what Glympse does, it is basically a very user-intuitive location sharing service. It is meant to quickly tell your contacts where you are and when you are arriving all in a very simple manner.

To do so, you just fire up the app, select a contact and a period for active location tracking and simply hit send. The recipient will then receive a link where he or she can track you current whereabouts until the period you specified expires. Read more »

Last year, when Google announced Android 5.0 Lollipop, one of the key features was full disk encryption that would make it impossible for someone to get data off your device even if they had the device. While this worked in a very specific scenario (it required having a passcode lock on the phone) it was still more secure than before.

Unfortunately, this came with a terrible performance penalty, as noted by AnandTech and Ars Technica in their reports, where the new Nexus 6 with disk encryption was slower than the older Nexus 5 in several tests due to its permanently enabled encryption feature. Read more »

A new rumor out of France claims Google is currently working on releasing the Android Wear app for Apple’s mobile platform. As you might have imagined, this would enable smartwatches running Android Wear to work with iPhones and iPads.

As this is nothing but an unconfirmed rumor at this point, the usual pinch of salt is advised. The new app for iOS could be launched during Google’s I/O developer conference in May, but it might get officially teased even sooner – so as to make (at least some) people think twice about buying an Apple Watch. While most handset makers are reducing the pre-installed ‘bloatware’ on the Android devices, Google has added the social traffic and navigation app – Waze in the basket of Google Mobile Services (GMS). Now handset makers will be able to pre-install the Waze app as part of the GMS bundle on the newly sold Android devices.

Waze provides smart navigation solution to its users thanks to the crowd-sourced data collected by those very users. The data includes traffic conditions, road obstacles, or even police traps and is seeded to users in real time through the app. Read more »

Today the new version of the all-important Google Play services framework was announced through the official Android developers blog. This new version is a major update, hence the version number 7.0 and brings about numerous new features, APIs and optimizations to existing features, which will allow both developers and users to make the most of their applications, mobile hardware and the services Google provides.

For anybody not exactly sure what Google play services is or what it does – it is probably best known as the app that helps you seamlessly update your other applications through the Play store. It is actually far more powerful than a simple update delivery system. It is actually a whole framework, or collection of functions or API’s which allow developers to easily access various hardware features on your device, as well as remote Google features, such as maps, authentication and others within their applications.
