Samsung readying standalone Ativ Camera app for Windows Phone 8.1 store

Samsung is apparently working on making an Ativ Camera app available in the Windows Phone app store. It will come with advanced features and will be available for Windows Phone 8.1, but limited to Samsung’s own devices.

Apple’s iWatch to get certified by the FDA as a medical device

Apple’s iWatch has apparently been finalized, in terms of design, specs, and features. The reason why it isn’t actually being manufactured yet has nothing to do with the Cupertino company not being satisfied with its new product, and everything to do with the iWatch requiring certification from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

This is necessary because Apple wants to position the iWatch as a medical device, the latest rumors on the matter say. And if that’s the case, then the FDA’s approval is needed before it goes on sale. Read more »

Apple Maps City Tours provide guided Flyover videos, hidden inside iOS 8 betas

Hidden neatly inside the iOS 8 betas is a feature that got mentioned only very briefly during Apple’s announcement of its newest mobile OS – City Tours.

ART will replace Dalvik in the next version of Android

The Android Runtime (ART) which Google introduced for testing purposes with its release of KitKat last year has now fully replaced the Dalvik virtual machine in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) code.

This means you should expect the next version of Android (which could get official as soon as next week) to come with ART and only ART – Dalvik is essentially dead from this point on. Read more »

Garmin launches Viago, its cheapest mobile navigation app yet

Garmin has released a new navigation app for iOS and Android today. It’s called Viago and it’s much cheaper than Garmin’s previous efforts in this space, though it’s still not free.

Amazon Appstore now boasts 240,000 apps, almost tripled in one year

Amazon is happy to report that its Android Appstore is now listing more than 240,000 apps. This is almost three times more than a year ago.

That number obviously doesn’t compare well to Google Play and the Apple iTunes App Store, both of which have long ago passed the 1 million apps mark, but it’s quite a feat nevertheless. Read more »

Samsung Galaxy Tab S pre-orders start at 329 quid in the UK, delivery expected on July 4

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and Galaxy Tab S 10.5 were announced at the Premiere event a couple of days ago. They’ve been up for pre-order in the US since yesterday, and now it’s the UK’s turn.

Starting today, you can pre-order the tablets at PC World, and they’re both expected to start shipping on July 4. They will become available in-store the following day, if what a tipster told Android Central is accurate. Read more »

Twitter user growth is slowing down

Twitter may still be growing its user count, but the growth is slowing compared to the past few years. The social network that focuses on brevity has seen growth declines in both its international as well as US-based monthly active users.

This is happening at a pretty quick pace, which means Twitter may have achieved peak growth a while back. The best growth it’s seen over the past three years was 140%, yet for the fourth quarter of 2013 that’s down to 40%. Read more »

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 headed to AT&T

After its Wi-Fi-only release form last month, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 is now on its way to AT&T in 4G LTE form. It will be joining the recently launched Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 in the carrier’s roster.

The info has been brought by the FCC, which has just certified the affordable 8-inch tablet. That process yielded a schematic of its back, where AT&T’s logo is featured in all its glory, leaving no doubt about the intended destination of the Tab 4 8.0. Read more »
