ARM is best known for designing mobile CPUs, but they make GPUs as well – their Mali-400 GPU has powered many popular high-end smartphones, but next year we’ll be seeing its successor inside low and mid-range phones.

Sony showcased a flexible 9.9″ OLED screen at SID’s Display Week 2012. The screen is just a prototype for now and wasn’t even physically present at the event – they just showed a video of it.

Sony said “We have just made the panel and did not have time to evaluate its reliability for bringing it out”, but even so “it is a realistic choice for volume production of a flexible OLED panel”. Read more »

It’s time for another episode of “ultra cheap Android tablet from a little known maker”. This time it’s the Takhti 7, a 7″ Ice Cream Sandwich tablet. It packs a 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM and 8GB of built-in storage.

The Sony Xperia P packs a special screen with WhiteMagic technology, which promises a lot of power-saving – up to 50% Sony says. But the other variable we need to consider here is the battery – and its meager 1305mAh capacity.

So, the screen may seem well suited to display web sites (which are predominantly white) with its white subpixels, but the battery is smaller than the one on a Samsung Galaxy S, which came out two years ago with a similarly-sized screen and a single core chipset. Read more »

Ivy Bridge reviews mostly agree that the new architecture doesn’t overclock as well as Sandy Bridge, but that didn’t stop intrepid overclocker HiCookie from reaching 7.032GHz – a world record – with an Intel Core i7 3770K running on a Gigabyte motherboard. He also set a world record for DDR3 overclocking while he was at it.

OmniVision has a new sensor ready for primetime – but unlike the monster that does 4K2K video, this one does “only” 1080p and is intended for the front panel of the smartphone (or tablet).

The 2MP sensor is only 3mm tall so it can be used as a front-facing camera on smartphones but also those thin ultrabooks. Read more »

Australian maker Kogan is joining the super cheap tablet race with the Agora 10 tablet. The slate boasts Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a 10″ XGA screen, HDMI port and more for just $179 (not sure if Australian dollars or US, but they’re about the same). Most other bargain tablets are 7″, so getting a 10″ tablet at such a low price does sound appealing.

Of course, there are tradeoffs to be made – the Kogan Agora 10 is powered by a single-core Cortex-A8 CPU running at 1.2GHz, but it does have 1GB of RAM. Read more »

A little after Samsung’s new Siri-killer app S Voice leaked, the South Korean company blocked it on non-Galaxy S III devices. Now that restriction seems to have been lifted as the app started working again, even on phones by other manufacturers.

We’re not sure what caused this change of heart or how long this will last, so you’d better hurry and ask S Voice all the joke questions you can think of before Samsung flips the off switch again. Read more »

The Sony Xperia P has an aluminum unibody design styled after the NXT series design with an illuminated transparent strip. The other thing on the outside – the 4″ qHD Reality display – also makes it unique among Sony’s current offerings as it contains a fourth white subpixel. Read more »

ST-Ericsson and Samsung officially unveiled what many already suspected – Samsung is using NovaThor chipsets for more than the Galaxy S Advance. The other two phones that make use of the platform are the pico-projector packing I8530 Galaxy Beam and the mid-range dual-core droid, the Galaxy Ace 2 (which just went on sale in the UK and Germany, by the way).

The Samsung I8530 Galaxy Beam packs a NovaThor U8500 with its two Cortex-A9 cores clocked at 1GHz and a Mali-400 GPU. Read more »

Did you know there was a site called iphone5.com as far back as 2008? Weird (or really forward thinking), considering that’s when only the second iPhone – the 3G – was announced. That site wasn’t owned or operated by Apple though – it used to be a forum with a ton of ads.

After filing a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Apple did win the rights to the domain though, WIPO’s decision just went through. Read more »

Panasonic continues to expand its Eluga line of droids. The latest addition goes by the name Panasonic Eluga V P-06D, which is on its way to Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo. It sits between the Eluga DL1 (or P-04D as is its NTT DoCoMo name) and the Eluga Power.

The Eluga V packs a 4.6″ LCD screen with 720p resolution and it’s dust and water resistant, just like its smaller counterpart, though it’s no longer as amazingly thin – its profile measures 10.7mm. Read more »

When Samsung announced its Galaxy S III Android flagship, it also unveiled several cool accessories that would allow you to “cut the cord” – go the wireless route on things like HDMI TV-Out (with the AllShare Cast dongle), listening to music (with the S-Pebble) and charge phone without plugging any cables with the wireless charging kit.
